Can a Windows 10 Pro activation code be used for Windows 11 Pro?

What happens, when I try to activate a newly installed Windows 11 or a machine with Windows 11 Home on it, with a Windows 10 Pro activation code?

It will upgrade to Pro.

If you're installing from a Windows multi iso, it will default to the Windows tier you're on.

If you’re activating with a pro license “After” you have installed Windows, then it will upgrade you to Win 11 Pro.

If you are doing a fresh install of Windows and your Laptop has the Windows version (Home) and key set into the BIOS or Firmware, you will most likely only be given the choice to install that Windows version. (After which you can upgrade with the key)

If you do have Windows Home set into the BIOS/Firmware, you can follow this to make sure you get the option to do a fresh install of Windows Pro using this tutorial/information. (Same rule applies for Windows 11)


Upgrading Windows Home with a Windows Pro key, is simple. You add the key, Windows makes some changes, after a short while, Windows Pro will be ready on your Laptop.

In short, if Windows Home is set in your BIOS/Firmware then Windows 11 Home will be your only install option, less you follow the instructions above.
