Good info, glasskuter. Personally, even prior to modern standby, I never liked putting a laptop into standard sleep mode unless I was leaving it on a desktop. I've had cases where I pulled a laptop out of a backpack to find out that it woke up while in this enclosed space with no ventilation, so the laptop was excessively warm. So, if I'm packing away the laptop, I will either perform a standard shutdown or a hibernate. This confusion has been brought about from people who have bought new laptops who have motherboards that only support modern sleep. As a result, these laptops do not 'behave' as they are accustomed to. Modern standby has serious issues which include overheating, battery drain, and loss of certain functionality when the laptop enters S0 sleep. It's not an OS issue, but the lack of S3 support of the hardware. People buy these laptops unknowingly of what they are getting and what problems they will have to deal with. Modern Standby was originally Microsoft's idea, but OEMs and mobo makers have made it so that the user doesn't have an option of using any other sleep state, which, depending on how one uses their laptop can cause havoc on the batteries and constant overheating of their hardware if the laptop is carried in a case. From a consumer standpoint, IMO it's a nightmare. I don't expect anything to be done about it, though.
