I tried opening the Movies & TV app to watch a movie I have listed in my library in the Microsoft store. I now get a message to play the video in the new Windows Media Player app. When I open Media Player, the only media I can play is what is stored on my hard drive in the Music and Video folders.
In the Microsoft Store app, I can see every title purchased over the past 6 or 7 years listed in my library. When I click on Watch or Open Movies & TV, I get "To play your videos, use the Media Player app" and a button to open Media Player.
When in the Microsoft Store, I click on the ellipsis to copy a link under "Share", paste the link into Media Player and then receive a message "We can't open (link). This may be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect, or the file is corrupt. 0xC00D36C4.
There is no provision to download any of the videos from the Microsoft Store library to the computer

I think they have to be downloaded from within the Movies & TV app to a place on your PC, then opened?

Fom the web:

To download movies from your Microsoft Store library, open the Microsoft Movies & TV app. Sign in with your Microsoft account, go to the "Purchased" tab, and then select the movie you want to download. Click the "Download" button, choose the desired file type and quality, and select a location on your computer to save the file.

Right.

I would suggest that the only way you might get that back, would be to disable app updates, find an old version of Movies & TV app and install it after removing the latest Movies & TV.

This is just a guess and I can’t really advise you on how or exactly where you would find an older version from a trusted or safe website.

Yes, I get it. I'm trying to figure out why attempting to open one app redirects me to a different one. If and when I find out what is going on, Ill post an update.

There is hardly anything (if anything) I would ever bother contacting Microsoft Support about. But if I had made purchases (Not Rented) Movies and no longer had access or the ability to download them due to the fact Microsoft decided to upgrade an app to render it impossible — that would be a reason for me to get right up them.

Maybe because they have been phasing out the Movies & TV app since 2023. In fact I don’t believe it is included with new clean installs of Windows 11 (24H2)

I went and checked to see what happens on my HP laptop, which is running the same version of Windows as my PC. The same thing happens on it. It would be nice if Microsoft would be a bit more attentive when making changes. I have a Movies Anywhere account linked to my Microsoft Movies and TV, but some studios are not included.
Looks like I'll just have to wait until Microsoft fixes the problem. And yes, I have submitted feedback to Microsoft.

If you had access to a laptop or PC that had Windows 10 that hadn’t updated the apps, perhaps you could download them.

Looks like I'll just have to wait until Microsoft fixes the problem.

I don’t believe that Microsoft thinks it’s a problem, my gut feeling is that this is by design due to the phasing out.

It appears the "Personal" or "Purchased" tab has been removed from the Microsoft Movies & TV app, causing issues for users trying to access their purchased movies and TV shows. Microsoft Community discussions and Reddit threads confirm this. Some users have reported that this issue started with a recent update, particularly around the release of KB5044273, OS Builds 19044.5011 and 19045.5011, in October 2024.

Some users have found a workaround by using the "My Movies and TV" link on the Microsoft Movies & TV website to access their purchased content.

Possible workaround to try:

I would consider contacting Microsoft Support.
I’d predict you’ll end up in an endless loop trying to actually make contact, I am really not sure.

I’d be mentioning that due to the changes to the Movies & TV app, you have effectively lost all purchases made to Microsoft.
That you’re not accustomed to throwing money away and that you request either a refund or a method to download what you paid for.

I’m a bit of an animal when being ripped off, but I’d suggest going a different way to what I would and try the “nice” approach, until such a time you need to rip someones head off and poo down their neck.

I have to keep reminding myself that support for any company is manned by minions that don’t make executive decisions.

I've submitted feedback to Microsoft and have gone to the Microsoft Community and submitted a question there. I actually stopped purchasing or renting digital videos over a year ago because, unlike a DVD or Blu-ray disc, it is too easy to lose access. I quit years iTunes when Apple changed their codecs and made it impossible to convert paid for videos that could be played outside of Apple's sandbox. There's only 1 or 2 that I wasn't able to save. I have a 4TB hard drive that has copies of purchased movies.
