Solved Cannot play movies purchased through Microsoft Store with Movies & TV or Media Player Error code 0xC00D36C4


I've submitted feedback to Microsoft and have gone to the Microsoft Community

I don’t believe either of those things will help to get back what you paid for. I believe Support should be contacted and Microsoft made accountable and a resolution offered via a human response.
After all, you didn’t grow that money on trees.

I don't think so, either. But from what I've seen there's a lot of unhappy campers out there so that makes me just one more. I will close out this thread and hope it serves as a heads up for others. Microsoft should have done a better job of warning users of what was coming. I've been aware of how Microsoft, Apple and Amazon treat digital purchases and have limited my spending on such for sometime now. A significant portion of my library was built by buying discs that came with digital copies. And, I still can access a good portion of what is in the Microsoft Store through Movies Anywhere.
It is irritating to suddenly not being able to do something on the computer that I'd been doing for many years. However, Murphy and I have been acquaintances for some time and I have tried to keep a step ahead of him. He got the drop on me this time.
Again, antspants, I greatly appreciate your efforts and ideas.

I received a reply on the Microsoft Community site. A moderator provided me with a solution that isn't perfect but it works. It involves uninstalling the current Movies & TV app and replacing it with an older version. There are two drawbacks, though. The first is that I need to open the old Movies & TV app, then open the Microsoft Store app and access the library to select a video to watch. The video plays with no problem. The second is that Microsoft will update the Movies & TV app to the version that doesn't work. This means that when I want to watch something, I need to set things up each time.

I only use Movies & TV to play my own mp4 files, it has some features that for my purposes are more convenient that the Media Player.

My most recent clean install of 24H2 had the newer version that lacks the Personal tab. I used exactly the same method to install the older version. To prevent the Store updating it, simply go to the Store's settings and turn off automatic updates.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
