Solved Can't boot from Macrium reflect rescue media usb

I created a usb rescue thumb drive for one of my pc's. I cannot boot into the One time boot menu with it. I have tried F12 but it just boots normally, F2 brings up the EUFI. I have checked the thumb drive and that works fine on my other pc. so I wonder if it is a, my Alienware Area 51M r2 or it's setup. or b, the thumb drive "built" incorrectly for my pc as when I compared the two there were different a couple of different files, but they are different pc's. thanks

Is F12 the temporary boot key? Sometimes it can be F7 or F8.
Ensure that you’re rapidly clicking the F12 key as soon as you see then manufacturer’s logo. I’ve found that sometimes clicking once doesn’t work.

I've run into this a few times. Assuming that you are using the correct hotkey and that is not the problem, please try this:

Plug in the thumb drive you want to make into your recovery disk. Be aware that we are going to wipe the contents and you will need to recreate it.

Run diskpart.

Once you get the diskpart prompt, type in

list disk

Determine the disk number for your thumb drive. If not sure, run these commands:

select disk x <-- Replace "x" with a drive number for which you want more detail
detail disk

Hopefully that tells you which drive the thumb drive is. Continue with the commands below, using the drive number you determined in place of "x".

select disk x
clean
convert mbr
create partition primary
format fs=fat32 quick
assign
exit

Now, recreate your recovery media onto that thumb drive from Macrium Reflect.

The above accomplishes two things:

1) Makes sure that we have an MBR rather than GPT.
2) Makes sure thumb drive is formatted with FAT32.

Some computers can boot with a thumb drive that has a GPT and/or NTFS filesystem, but it will cause problems for others.

Thanks, it turned out to be the F1 key then a little box appears in the bottom right corner that offers F2 EUFI and then F12 for boot. I didn't know it was F! first.

All sorted thanks. The manual said it was the F12 key, it turns out it's the F1 key which took me to a small menu offering F2 EUFI and F12 Boot. last time a read a manual :) thanks for the advice

Not for a Macrium recovery usb. As it's boots using the standard Microsoft WinRE then it is booting from a trusted OS.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.
