Solved Can’t use Outlook 2021 to access Yahoo-hosted AT&T email

I have a client who has been an AT&T U-verse customer for many years. In fact, her email address dates back to the SBC Global (a successor to one of the baby-Bell) days.

I was trying to set up Outlook (from a download of the download of the Microsoft Office 2021 suite) with access to her SBC Global email address. Documentation I could find suggested to use the servers imap.mail.att.net and smtp.mail.att.net, using the usual port numbers and SSL/TLS authentication. I could not get this to work and to get Outlook to make an authenticated connection to the IMAP server. The AT&T support agent found evidence of the fact that only Outlook 2019 and older are compatible with the Yahoo/AT&T IMAP and SMPT servers. Could this be true?

Yes, the answer to the question could be true. I'd wonder if the issue is Webmail, only accessible through a browser like Hotmail and Outlook.com [both now merged into outlook.live.com]. I'd try installing the free Thunderbird to check it if works.

Most e-mail providers now require you to generate an app password, separate from their normal user password, in order to access e-mail services. This is an extra layer security, much like one-time 2FA texts.

It turns out it’s AT&T’s issue, or maybe Yahoo’s. On the AT&T website we can set up a “secure mail key,” which all client software has to use. You can set up multiple, auto-generated secure mail keys, using one for each email client, or share them between multiple clients. They can not be retrieved. A new one has to be made if the previous one is forgotten.

At least on my Mac I was able to authenticate my client’s email account in the Mail app. I do suspect that with Outlook on Windows it will be the same.

This is the answer. I’ve set up outlook 2021 with a yahoo email before. Generate an app specific password and you will have no issues setting it up.

I have the same problem and the agent at AT&T could not find how to access the MANAGE SECURE MAIL KEYS to be able to create one within my At&T profile. I know it is possible since I have done this before, about 3 years ago, and was able to access my email through Outlook. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The At&t agent & I tried those instructions but the link to "secure mail link" does not exist. I've been trying all different scenarios for 2 days now.

The Secure Mail Key option used to be listed under Profile. It is no longer there. This is an AT&T issue. If you're an AT&T customer, then you need to report it as a problem with their web site. I would if I could, but I am no longer an AT&T customer, even though I use an AT&T email address in Outlook.

Thank you and that is exactly the conclusion the At&t agent & I came to this afternoon. Not the best conclusion since I still can't use my email in Outlook until At&t decides to get their s****** together. Lol. Thanks again!

Update: As of yesterday, the Secure Mail Key option has now been restored on the ATT.COM web site.

I have a similar problem. My normal Yahoo email is not adding to MS Outlook 365.
