Personalization Change Scrollbar Size in Windows 11

  • Staff
Scrollbar_banner.png

You can change the height and width size of scrollbars in Windows to be as thick or thin as you want.

This tutorial will show you how to change the size of scrollbars for you account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

This will not affect the size of scrollbars used in Microsoft Store apps and any modern UI like Settings or Start menu.

EXAMPLE: Default and larger scrollbar size in File Explorer

Default_scrollbar_size.png
Larger_scrollbar_size.png

Here's How:

1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

Scrollbar_size-1.png

3 Change Scrollbar Buttons Size to be Smaller or Larger

A) In the right pane of the WindowsMetrics key, double click/tap on the ScrollHeight string value to modify it. (see screenshot below step 2)

B) Enter a value between -120 (smaller) to -1500 (larger) for what you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

-255 is the default value.

The value uses the following formula: -15 x size you want in pixels.

For example: -15 x 17 = -255

Scrollbar_size-3.png

4 Change Scrollbar Width Size to be Thinner or Thicker

A) In the right pane of the WindowsMetrics key, double click/tap on the ScrollWidth string value to modify it. (see screenshot below step 2)

B) Enter a value between -120 (thinner) to -1500 (thicker) for what you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

-255 is the default value.

The value uses the following formula: -15 x width you want in pixels.

For example: -15 x 17 = -255

Scrollbar_size-2.png

5 When finished, close Registry Editor.

6 Either sign out and sign in or restart the computer to apply.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I don't understand the size -330, but I use Winaero Tweaker to set the width. What size do you tweak?

Winaero is doing the exact same tweak.
In the Winaero program it just shows the multiplier.

I went to the registry, just to see what the actual numbers were.
When Shawn writes a reg patch for a tutorial like this, he has to use the actual registry numbers.
So I just got into the habit of checking what the actual registry numbers were.

In this registry location... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

You change the numbers for both... ScrollHeight and ScrollWidth
Those are the items I set to -330
-330 divided by -15 = 22 <----- the scroll bar size in pixels.

To get the same size... just set the numbers (sliders) to 22 in Winaero

Yeah, well EDGE is just plain weird. I removed it from Win 11.

Windows 11 Pro 22H2 64-bit (build 22621.900)
I would rather make my life easier and use Winaero Tweaker to tweak values. So in layman's terms, 22 is the best size. I will try it, thanks.
