"change what closing the lid does" not hibernating

I am trying to fix a problem for a friend so I don't know when this started. I had suggested to her maybe the switch in the hinge is broken but a local repair person said it's a software issue.

I reset Windows with a cloud download but kept personal files so it wasn't a proper clean install from a bootable USB. I have read many posts and tried various things but nothing has worked so far. I can sleep and hibernate from within Windows.

The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S3)
Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Have you tried Control Panel / All Control Panel Items / Power Options

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

There is no switch in the hinge. All modern laptops use a Hall Effect sensor.

There's a small magnet in the lid and a sensor on the motherboard. When closed it detects the changed magnetic field. This sensor could be placed almost anywhere. On the laptop I'm using at the moment, with the aid of a small screwdriver I can feel that there's a magnet about a third of the way down the left edge of the screen. If I place a fridge magnet on the palmrest just below the lower left corner of the the keyboard it puts the laptop to sleep, remove it and it wakes.

I have changed the settings in powershell with powercfg and it is reflected in advanced power settings in the control panel and but still it doesn't hibernate.

I booted into Linux Mint from a USB and set the lid close action to hibernate and it also didn't work so I guess it must be a hardware failure.

Your need to use a poorly-documented switch to see the correct section in your PowerCfg properties.
The particular property you ware interested in is a 'hidden' one.

Get PowerCfg properties using this syntax to include 'hidden' properties.
PowerCfg -QH

You'll then see your equivalent of these values.
