Apps Choose Default Apps in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you different ways to set default apps used to open file and link types for your account in Windows 11.

A default app is the program that Windows has assigned to open a file or link type with by default when you open it.

Default apps you choose will only apply to your account and will not affect other accounts on the PC.

Reference:

Starting with Windows 11 build 22567, Microsoft has updated the “Open with” dialog box to align with Windows 11 design principles. The updated dialog box honors light/dark theme. We have also simplified the experience by making it possible to update your default app with just one click.

Starting with Windows 11 build 23419, Microsoft is introducing a new Settings deep link URI for applications to take their users directly to the appropriate location in Settings for the user to change their defaults. This is an extension to our existing ms-settings: URI scheme.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22631.5549 (23H2) and build 26100.4484 (24H2) Microsoft is rolling out some small changes for your setting your browser defaults in Windows 11 via Settings > Apps > Default apps:
  1. Additional file and link types will be set for the new default browser, if it registers them.
  2. The new default browser will be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu unless you choose not to pin it by clearing the checkboxes.
  3. There is now a separate one-click button for browsers to change your .pdf default, if the browser registers for the .pdf file type.
Starting with Windows 11 build 26120.4162 (Beta 24H2) and build 26200.5622 (Dev 24H2), to help you quickly find the right app for opening files, Microsoft is trying out showing recommendations from the Microsoft Store app within the “Open with…” dialog. These recommendations are denoted by a Store icon next to apps in the dialog.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26220.7344 (Dev & Beta), when you try to open a file in Windows with no associated app, the Open With dialog box pops up to suggest apps you can use by clicking on “see more apps in the Microsoft store”. Now, apps from the Microsoft Store are included directly in this list, so you don’t have to navigate to the Microsoft Store to find the right one. This makes it faster and easier to find and install the app you need.

> The new default browser will be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu unless you choose not to pin it by clearing the checkboxes.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Apps on the left side, and click/tap on Default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Is there any way to set the default app for all users and not just the current user?

I never seem to find a way that sticks.

If you're part of a domain, there's a GPO setting to load the default File Type Associations from a XML file on every user logon. But that erases any of the user's changes.

For standalone PC's, you can create an elevated scheduled task on logon and run SetUserFTA. SetUserFTA will modify default apps as needed, so it won't wipe out associations for other files.

Here's a dirty secret:
DISM just copies your XML to \Windows\System32\OEMDefaultAssociations.xml

The command really exists to make life easier for updating offline images, so you don't search for folders.

Hopefully, that feature will be added back in the future if enough people send feedback to Microsoft about it. :(
Over four years later and that feature still doesn't exist (unless I've missed something).

Does anyone know of a third-party tool that efficiently changes defaults apps? For example, I want to change every extension associated with Notepad to my editor of choice.

Previously I could use IFEO to redirect all calls to notepad.exe to my preferred editor, but Microsoft severely crippled that feature in Windows 11. So a per-app association changer seems to be the next best approach. If one doesn't exist, I guess that's my next programming project.

I agree. It would be nice if Microsoft added a button to option three like in step 4 of option 6 to set the app to be the default for all of its supported file/link types at once.

Indeed. And it looks really difficult to program a solution because that's the whole point. Microsoft implemented a hash security system on associations to prevent programs from changing associations without the user's consent. The command line tool SetUserFTA looks like it's intended to work around the restrictions, but the personal edition isn't much help:

I think I'll look at disabling "AppDefaultHashRotation (UserChoiceLatest)". I never had a problem with the old system.

This requires a reboot to disable, since it's done by Feature ID (ViveTool or reg key change).

If I disable the feature then the following commands would be redundant?

Powershell:
# Disable UCPD
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UCPD" -Name "Start" -Value 4

# Disable scheduled task
schtasks /Change /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\AppxDeploymentClient\UCPD velocity" /Disable

No. UCPD runs at the kernel level to lock specific reg keys in memory so they can't be altered So if you were to reverse engineer the hashes, it wouldn't help since you can't update the keys on a live system. You would have to boot into WinPE or WinRE to make updates.

Having SYSTEM or TI rights wouldn't help you, since the block is placed at the kernel filter layer.
