Clean Install vs Upgrade with Installation Assistant vs Re-Install

It makes sense that performing a clean install of Windows 11 will apply all new device drivers. But does the same thing occur when performing:
- upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 using the installation assistant (keep apps and files)?
- re-install of Windows 11 using Win 11 installation media (keep apps and files)?

I would do the upgrade first to save me all the trouble installing everything from scratch. If for some reason I can't upgrade, then I would backup my data and do the clean installation.

I assume from how it went, I can now get most of the benefits of a clean install via the repair method instead, without the hassle of having to redo the customization, which is now quite extensive and time-consuming.

I already did the upgrade Jun 19th. It ran fine for 10 days then started having issues with mkv movie file playback, so I made several changes trying to solve that, including driver updates which resulted in the machine freezing:
Hard freeze when idle, three nights in a row

I would love to do a clean install, but this machine is a whole home DVR that is extremely difficult to setup from scratch. It would only be a LAST resort. This is why I am specifically asking if device drivers would get changed back to that June 19th state if I did either:
- upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 using the installation assistant (keep apps and files)?
- re-install of Windows 11 using Win 11 installation media (keep apps and files)?

I only ever in-place update now because restoring all my customizations takes too long.

Me too, however any custom system icons are reset to default because the respective modified .dll and .dll.mun files are replaced and I have to redo them again.

I had a win 11 upgraded from win 10. It had many problems.
I decide to do a clean install on my desktop and laptop. One full day for each, but I don;t regret.
Over the years the computer collects a lot of trash as unused files and on the register.
Some have upgraded from win 7 or 8 to 10.

There is nothing like a clean install to have a clean OS running smooth.

You are lucky to need only one full day. If I had too much free time, I would need 2-3 days for mine and since I don't have, last time it took over a week to do the bulk of the job. It took some more days until finally the computer was at the state I wanted. Not exactly as it was before, but close enough regarding the applications, games and configuration. With too many to install I am bound to miss something or some setting will be different etc. I hope I won't do it again any time soon. Thankfully there will be a 25H2 Enablement Package to easily upgrade from 24H2, so I won't have to do a full upgrade using the ISO.
