cloning new windows 11 os to new 1T drive

Expecting new Dell Rugged 5420 laptop to arrive tomorrow. I need to upgrade the 256ssd drive to 1T drive.
I know there is online software that i've used in the past whats the best way to connect the new 1t hd to laptop to be able to clone the windows 11 OS?
Any help would be great. thank you

If it was me I would clone the existing drive to the new drive using Macrium (other programs are available) and then just change the drives over. If there is nothing on the 256 drive seeing as it's a new laptop you could just stick the 1tb drive in and install the OS to that drive from a usb

Nice laptop. ^^

Might wanna check, you can probably run both the 256GB SSD and the 1TB SSD at the same time.
Leave Windows on the 256GB and put everything else on the 1TB.

so i would just select the usb drive from the macrium software and clone OS? how big a usb drive do i need? thank you for responding.

not sure if the laptop has another slot? i'll check it out. yes that would be an easier solution if possible. thanks for the response.

Just create an installation usb using windows mct and boot from that onto the new 1tb drive. Also check out what @Ghot suggested

I "think" it may have a 2230 and a 2280 slot. But as I stated, I would check that first.

So, unless you ordered that laptop with more than one storage device... there's no place to put a 2nd storage device.
So if you want to clone, you'll need to use an external enclosure.
If you already have the 1TB SSD, you'll need something like this...




You can still just keep Windows on the 256GB SSD and get something like this...





For future reference, I also found the Service Manual...

May I ask why didn't you ordered with a 1T drive?

This is why I hate these companies. Why do they make laptops hard to perform upgrades? It's senseless.

I think quite a few people hate being trapped with their hardware.
But there is a company that's attempting to do something about it...




As for the laptop in this topic, it's one of those "rugged" laptops.
They're made more to survive anything, than to be necessarily easily upgraded, etc.
Ruggedized laptops, do what they're supposed to do... survive. They cost a pretty penny too.

Thanks for sharing that website. I have visited and bookmarked for later. I'm glad to see someone is working on a laptop design that is not so much propriatary.

It was refurbished and i saved about 2g on the unit. New units are taking 2months delivery

So there are three partitions on my current disc. One say winretool at 700mb. Is that the OS that i can clone?

In fact there are four partitions. Disk manager hides MSR
- EFI - Fat32 - 100M
- MSR - RAW - 16M
- C: - NTFS
- MS Recovery - ~700M

The winretool is part of the MS Recovery.

To work perfectly you should clone the whole drive. (four partitions above)

so i managed to clone to new ssd. system starts up with new ssd installed. when i check storage it still sees new ssd as having 256storage vs 1t. when i look at partitions in macrium i see that 693gb is a partition that's grey out. is there a way to repartition in macrium without starting over?

Consider making a backup image instead of a clone.

Clean install Windows 11 on the new disk drive.

Restore only C:

Run startup repair as needed.

I expect you can resize with that tool it is a common feature.

Do whatever you want to it with Partition Wizard Free. Not with Macrium, Macrium is for cloning and imaging.
Install PW, then run it. You`ll see your disk layout. Right click on your newly cloned SSD, and choose what you wanna do from the drop down.
If you wanna extend C, then do that. If you wannna make a partition out of the unallocated space then do that. It`s your choice :)
Then just click Apply down in the bottom left corner.
