Virtualization Connect Hyper-V to Local Computer Virtualization Server in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to connect Hyper-V to the local computer virtualization server in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Hyper-V enables running virtualized computer systems on top of a physical host. These virtualized systems can be used and managed just as if they were physical computer systems, however they exist in virtualized and isolated environment. Special software called a hypervisor manages access between the virtual systems and the physical hardware resources. Virtualization enables quick deployment of computer systems, a way to quickly restore systems to a previously known good state, and the ability to migrate systems between physical hosts.

The virtualization server is the computer Hyper-V connects to run virtual machines from. The local computer is the default server.

If you mistakenly removed the local computer server from Hyper-V, you will find yourself needing to connect Hyper-V back to it for your virtual machines to be available again.

If you stop or disable the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service by mistake, it removes the local computer server from Hyper-V. It is required to enable and start the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service to connect Hyper-V to a server.

You must be signed in as an administrator to connect Hyper-V to the local computer as a virtualization server.

Here's How:

1 Enable and start the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service if not already.

2 Open Hyper-V Manager (virtmgmt.msc).

3 Perform an action below to connect Hyper-V to a server: (see screenshots below)
  • Select Hyper-V Manager in the left pane, and click/tap on Connect to Server in the right "Actions" pane.
  • Right click on Hyper-V Manager in the left pane, and click/tap on Connect to Server.
  • Select Hyper-V Manager in the left pane, click/tap on Action on the menu bar, and click/tap on Connect to Server.

4 Select (dot) Local computer, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

5 Hyper-V will now be connected to your computer used as the "local computer" virtualization server to run virtual machines from. This local computer server will show with your computer name (ex: "BRINKW11") under Hyper-V Manager in the left pane. (see screenshot below)

That's it,
