Solved CPU-Z: completely legit?

I've been using CPU-Z for years, and never had any reason to doubt its reports on my hardware.

Today, I went to the Graphics tab and (maybe for the first time ever) clicked the Tools button at the bottom of the screen, and then the "Check for driver updates" item.

That took me to an unsavory-looking site marked NOT SECURE in Chrome, and the site is peddling one of those "free scan" programs that has to be downloaded and run, and then requires payment if any action on the program's findings is desired. There is no pricing available on the one page the site has.

Is there any reason to suspect that CPU-Z is not legitimate? What, me worry? Well, yes, sometimes.

The only place I would get drivers from is from the part MFG. I would never use any other site.

No, but 'free' software needs to be supported somehow, and sponsored ads are one such way. Just don't click the 'check for driver updates' link and you should be safe :wink:

Could be something wrong with the latest update of CPU-Z 1.98. Updated yesterday a system or two, wanted to do the same today for other, and the update was pulled from the site

the 1.98 version wasn't really pulled from the site
maybe on that other system you needed to clear the web browser cache and reload the site or wait another day or two to visit the site which should offer the 1.98 version

I usually get the zip or portable cpu-z download (not the one with the setup installer) so I manually replace the older files with the new version

Interesting. I thought I had the portable version, and there is no CPU-Z entry in my Programs and Features list of installed programs, but when I just now went for the .zip to update to 1.98, all I got was this:

... and, as you can see, the .ini, the readme, and the x32.exe are superfluous. I just needed to replace the previous .exe with the new one.

But when I looked at the folder I had the previous version (1.97) in, it contained three folders alongside the .exe and the .ini: App, Data, and Other. I think I must have used the installer sometime earlier, to get those folders in there. And when I replaced the .exe and deleted the three folders, the program ran exactly as expected.

Can any of you colleagues who have participated in this thread (or other members) confirm for me that your folder with the portable cpuz_x64.exe in it does NOT have three folders in there with it?

It was re-uploaded on the site a couple of days later. You are aware that this was 10 days ago?

Can't be the problem with browser cache, as I've downloaded it, and when I checked later, it was pulled... But who cares now...

Not sure I understand the question rog version
Portable does not install it just runs so just right click the x64 seeing nobody has x32 anymore and shortcut to desktop is what I do.
Might want to right click the zip folder and properties and unblock cpu-z first so it runs properly.

No problem. Please ignore my query. The folder I have the executable stored in has only one other file now: the .ini. It doesn't matter where the extra (now deleted) folders came from. They're history. Thanks.

CPU-Z is fine. I wouldn't trust advertisers from anywhere, including Microsoft, Google and Apple.

Updated to 1.98 a couple of days ago via Winget and have seen no problems with it.

always download CPU-Z direct from the www.cpuid.com web site and nowhere else

I always download & run the "zip" or portable version of CPU-Z, even when new versions come out
