Daily GameInput Reconfiguration

For the last couple of months at least, there’s been the same entry in my Reliability Monitor, every single day: “Microsoft GameInput | Successful application reconfiguration.”

The description says, “Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Microsoft GameInput. Product Version: 10.1.22621.1011. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Reconfiguration success or error status: 0.”

I've uninstalled GameInput via Programs & Features, but the next day it returns, as does the Reliability Monitor entry. I've also looked online and found no helpful clues.

Trying to understand why it’s happening every day, and what can be done about it since it clearly isn’t right.

The computer is otherwise entirely reliable, and there are no other symptoms or odd behaviors.

Thanks very much. I’d be grateful for any help/advice.

I have the same message happening on every restart, I am also wondering what is up...
Otherwise PC is working completely fine :)

FYI - I haven't solved this issue yet.

glasskuter was good enough to post this link, which might be related, but it didn't accurately describe my situation, and I couldn't take some of the steps in that post.

Some additional information: I'm on Windows 11, while my son and wife are on Win 10. My son's gaming computer has the identical issue, while my wife's does not (she's on a generic laptop). Not surprising since it's a game component or software issue.

Since I haven't noticed any other issues, I'm not going to worry about it but will occasionally check around for a solution.

I get the same issue at every restart too, I'm on Build 22621.232. I just did a restart at 14:34 and the entry is there

Yes my PC runs fine and is stable, this only happens after a restart.

I don't seem to have "apps and features," but I have this in Installed apps. I've uninstalled it several times in the past, but it always reappears after a restart.

It's not like MS doesn't know about it. I found literally thousands of complaints going back to 2020.. It is all part of Microsoft's "Gaming Services". Be glad you are getting only a mention in reliability monitor as many report freezes, restarts, and even BSOD relating to this. (From what I can tell, these more critical reports are from gamers whose game depends on GameInput to run.)

I don't have an answer how to get rid of it permanently as I can't find one nor can I tell you for certain why I am not getting the same results you are.

Whether it has anything to do with it at all or not, I can say I have no third party games installed, no Xbox controller, and don't run MS game apps. In my services, Xbox Access Management Manager is set as manual-trigger start, Xbox Livegamesave as Manual-Trigger start, and Xbox Networking set as Manual start.

I do still have the Xbox app installed. When I look in task Manager under Xbox I see 3 processes running-runtime broker, xbox game bar full trust com server and xbox game bar. An additional process running is Service Host Xbox Live Auth Mgr.

You seem to be saying I shouldn't worry about it, and if that's correct, I think that is useful advice and much appreciated.

It's a weird Windows quirk but unless it causes crashes I won't worry about it either.

I'm one of the unlucky ones who's been having gameinput reboot their Windows 11 computer around once daily for about 6 weeks - and mostly during desktop tasks and videocalls rather than gaming. I do believe the issues started when downloading a game via the Xbox app, although uninstalling the app and associated services via the console has made no difference.

I've tried pretty much every suggestion out there (everything is up to date, all hardware inc memory tested) but to no avail, and the MVPs on the Microsoft forums are about as useful as a chocolate teapot, simply listing time consuming non-fixes time after time.

Hello, I am having the same issue. I managed to fix it by renaming the 3 or 6 folders in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps named Microsoft.GamingServices_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. If you can't see the WindowsApps folder it is because its hidden. Anw I also found that fixing my crashes I can't play Forza Horizon 5, so if you have games in Xbox Account that you play just test them to see if they run. Now for my situation I am waiting for the official update of Windows 11 22H2 because I am currently running the Beta Version. If you found any other solutions please let me know because it is SOOOO annoying to randomly crash every day.

I have same issue, but it says windows was not shut down properly when I restart, along with the GameInput reconfiguration every time I restart.

I have the same "Successful application reconfiguration" message in my reliability monitor. Sometimes does it twice a day. However the message is always under the row named "Informational Events" and those are not errors. This is only a Success Notification. Why it's doing it every day, I don't know. I think a lot of people are confused when they look at the Reliability Monitor because very often when your computer crashes, it will only say "Windows was not properly shut down". Often times, the Reliability Monitor cannot tell you why Windows crashed. For that you need to use WinDbg to analyze the BSOD memory crash dump file, and you'll need to connect it to the MS Symbol Server. You also need to be able to understand what you're looking at or show it to somebody who does.

...so it's extremely possible that GameInput is not actually the cause of your crashes, and it's just that you don't understand what the Reliability Monitor is actually telling you. Why would disabling GamingServices have anything to do with GameInput when they are not installed in the same location nor are they even installed the same way?

I read the MS Docs page for the Introduction of the GameInput Service, it seems it's a newer addition to Windows and is now becoming the standard for how games will interface with Keyboards/Mice/GamePads from now and into the future. They claim that it's built around an entirely new direct memory access (DMA) architecture for the lowest possible input latency and resource usage while being completely threadsafe. "GameInput is the recommended API for all new code, regardless of the target platform, because it provides support across all Microsoft platforms (including earlier versions of Windows), and provides superior performance versus legacy APIs. For games developed on the Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK) for Xbox One, GameInput is the only input API available."

So if you're going to be playing games, this might not be something you'd want to disable.

PS: You should never be renaming your system files as a means to disable something. That's GOING to cause Windows to log errors in the Event Viewer every time Windows cannot access that file. Now imagine if you've done that to 5 or 6 different things and now hundreds of errors are being logged. That's gonna make it hard to find fixes for other unrelated problems. Be careful who's advice you take on the internet! Some people are just guessing and poking around things they don't understand.

I guess I'm unsure what the OP means by "it clearly isn't right". How do you know that it's not right? Does the message appear under the row named "Critical events"? That's usually where a crashed program will be recorded. I'm pretty sure that what you're seeing is a message under "Informational Events"... those are just there to tell you that something was a success. Why are they telling you about this every day? I don't know, but possibly because GameInput was not added to Windows very long ago, it's pretty new. You can't diagnose your computer crashing by looking at the Reliability Monitor. That is not how you diagnose. In my previous post, above this one, I explain that you need to analyze the memory crash dump for that and the average user wont know how to do it.

For the first time in literally months, I rebooted my PC and didn't get the daily GameInput re-configuration. No idea what's change or which update has fixed it. I normally restart every 3-4 days.

Any fix found for the problem? I now have the same issue as mentioned in this thread
Gameinput reconfigurates itself after every restart.
No crashes, no freezes.
Started when i installed xbox app & downloaded sea of thieves from gamepass.
