Dead Mouse On Arrival

I have a 6 month old computer that is also Windows 11 Pro. Occasionally on boot up the mouse and keyboard are dead. So the only way I can correct this and make the computer work again is to hold the power button in for a few seconds. After it shuts down, I can restart it and all is fine. Any suggestions on what is causing this and how to correct it?

I've seen similar and the cure was to actually unplug the power cord from the computer on Desktop and on Notebook also remove the battery if possible. The main issue with a Desktop is it has constant power to the motherboard even when fully shut down, pulling the power cord allows a clean startup. Last one I worked on was a Notebook with an erratic mouse and the cure was removing all power to start over. Unlike the old AT-style motherboards where the power switch connected to the power supply, the newer ATX-style boards have the switch attached to the board which in turn is connected to the power supply, pressing the switch tells the board to start the power.

If the mouse uses a USB dongle, try switching ports. You might also consider entering the BIOS and enabling legacy USB, or something like that, to see if the issue goes away.

Thanks for this information. I can easily do this. This is a desktop computer, so when you say remove the battery you're not talking about that little battery on the motherboard itself, are you? I am thinking that I will unplug it, remove the batteries from both the mouse and keynoard and after a few minutes restart it.

Thank you. The keyboard is a Logitech MK710 and the mouse is a Logitech M705. Not sure what legacy USB is or where to find it in the UEFI.

Removing the CMOS battery [that's what stores the user BIOS settings] just returns the BIOS to its defaults and there are times that can be necessary. Most times the defaults are quite adequate but I don't talk about making the changes in over-clocking, making the computer do more that factory release as it's an excellent way to kill a motherboard.

Depending upon the USB ports which have black centers for USB 2 and blue centers for USB 3, the legacy boot for USB usually was USB 2 and the OS provided support, loaded drivers for USB 3. Newer computers may have only black centers which combine USB 2 and USB 3 for startup support.

Thanks. I have it all powered down now and I did switch the USB port the USB dongle was connected to. It was in a USB 3 port so maybe that was the cause. Only time will tell but I appreciate all the help here.

Now that you mention it I'll tell you what I have and maybe you can answer a question for me. I have black, blue, 1 mini USB (Ithink that is what it is called,) and 1 green centered USB port. Can you tell me what the green USB port is?

Well, you have to look for it. If you're not familiar with the UEFI, perhaps your owner's manual can help.

As for both M&K being Logitech, simply try moving the dongle to a USB 2.0 port. I've been using Logitech mice and keyboards for year, and haven't seen your issue, but I know it can happen. I'm currenlty running a Logitech Craft keyboard and Logitech MX Master 3 mouse.

I personally would advise against removing the CMOS battery as that's going to clear the BIOS settings including any customized settings you have. You will then need to setup the BIOS again. Personally, I think removing the battery is overkill, but your system.

Thanks and that is what I thought. I didn't remove it but removed all the other batteries, moved the USB dongle, left the computer unplugged for 20 minutes, and then fired it up. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully that will fix it. Strange thing is we have had this computer for about 4 or 5 months now and just this past week it started doing this.

If interested here is what I found about what a green centered USB port is:
"It is only found in USB ports. This colour indicates that the port supports high-current charging or allows you to power your electronic devices with your laptop in sleep mode without turning it on. Ports that support Qualcomm Quick Charge technology are typically coloured green."

I've not yet seen a green USB port. The former charging port on a cellphone was like a Mini-B but now ours have the USB-C port. I have an External DVD drive that uses USB-A and USB-C. My 2 Win11 Desktops have USB-C ports. I do have a USB 3 Drive Dock which includes 3 USB 3 ports and one is a charger but they are all blue.

Yeah, I wouldn't install the mouse dongle there. Typically, a USB 2 port works just fine, though I've found USB 3 ports also work, but just to be sure, I run my dongle off a USB 2 port.

Thanks. I did have it in a USB 3 but moved it to a USB 2 in trying to fix this problem.
