Not working at all.

C:\windows\system32\defrag.exe starts and stops (flashes an empty window) even when run as administrator.

Have you tried to open defrag in Safe Mode? This would rule out a few things.

No, didn't think of that,will try now.
Edit, just tried, same thing. Actually all I'm worried about is if Trim works because all my disks are SSDs. It's turned on and enabled but not sure trim is actually running.

Creating or using another user profile might be worth ago.

I would maybe query your SSD's with the diagnostic tool or maybe use Perfmon to generate a System Diagnostics report (this will query SMART).

Actually, SSDs are not to be defraged. I use this command to see if Trim is on:

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

In CMD.

disabledeletenotify 0 enabled

I run other diagnostic tools, all is fine with disks but if defrag.exe is not working, it's possible that Trim doesn't run as scheduled every10 days, which was my last setting. Trim is essential for SSDs for Garbage collection and Write equalizing to speed them up and prolong life.

Trim is definitely important, but not as important as a healthy drive!

Did you try another user profile? Could rule out a local account setting issue.

You can check via Task Scheduler to see, if it successfully ran and when.

I prefer 3rd party tools to trim SSD, since 11 defragmented SSDs twice, MS does not seem to get it right, after years. :facepalm:

The Defrag UI crashing should generate an event in the Application log in Event Viewer. This might shine some light on the issue.

Event log is not showing error and that Defragsvc or any service resembling defragmentation does not exist.

Maybe the link/shortcut you were using is corrupt.

SFC does fix start menu links - are you using a shortcut to open defrag?

Have you clicked on optimise? You can see it doing TRIM if it is working. Highlight the drive you want to optimise.

At first as usual I tried from disk Properties/Tools and didn't work. than from Run and Control panel, nothing. Then found Defrag.exe file in windows system 32 folder, also with same result. System checks clear and no mention of anything wrong in event log. Only place it works is from what I showed above.

Well it would, that's the command line version. You have to open an admin command prompt to run that one.
