Are you on Pro? I am quite surprised that Dell would encrypt a home version of windows but I haven't bought a Dell in years. My nephew still has the Inspiron 7559 I gave him around 2013 or so. It was not encrypted.
No, it is a Home Edition. I am surprised too...

Did you manage to turn off BitLocker? I'm running the Pro version and in File Explorer if I right click on drive C I have the option to turn on Bitlocker. If I was using BitLocker I'm sure that I would have the option to turn it off.
Yes, from Settings - Privacy and Security.

I will try the repair upgrade again now...

An article on bitlocker from Dell. Towards the middle of the page this help article says that Devices are not shipped with encryption enabled. Did you order this laptop from Amazon? The reason I ask is I have seen people say that Amazon reships computers that are sent back to them without resetting them.

No, from Dell eBay.
Anyway, I will encrypt it again now.
So, I have run the repair upgrade again, it definitely did what it had to do and when it restarted Windows it said "getting things ready for you", the usual message one gets when reinstalling Windows or booting for the first time, but still no change to my problems, although there are some other minor changes.
The funny thing is that, I know that Modern Standby is not really Sleep, but I have a very old USB keyboard with a sleep button..., and it works when I connect it. With Fn+insert nothing happens even if I change it to hibernate.
There was a BIOS upgrade since I bought my laptop, so maybe it caused the issue, who knows, and BIOS upgrades cannot be reverted.
I will perform a clean install at some stage, but not right now...

I think I triggered automatic encryption when I signed in to my Microsoft account the first time:
Automatic device encryption only starts after the Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE) is completed and a Microsoft Account (MSA) is used on the system (e.g. use MSA for Windows login, add MSA as email, app, and work or school account, log in to the Microsoft Store app with MSA, redeem or activate Microsoft Office or other Microsoft applications with MSA).

I am quite surprised that Dell would encrypt a home version of windows
The OEM's set up device encryption which is not Bitlocker but uses the same tech. Think of it as BitLocker "lite"

Does it work with the inbuilt keyboard?
Sorry I was not clear. I actually meant that the sleep button works on the external (USB) keyboard, but Fn+Insert (which is supposed to have the function of a sleep button on the inbuilt keyboard), does not.
I have decided to forget about it for the moment, as I can put the laptop to sleep in other ways, and I prefer hibernation to S0. It is really quick to resume, so I can easily use it instead of S0.
And although the Fn+Insert key is in my manual, I have also found this about Dell notebooks in general:

Screenshot 2022-01-26 113214.png

As my laptop does not have QuickSet or ContolPoint, this might be the reason why Fn+Insert does not work...

Yes, we had mentioned that the sleep button might not work by default, but I was not sure because it even works on external keyboards...
Anyway, all good now. Thank you for your help. :)
