Desktop icons: Opening with a single click without changing file explorer settings?

Is there any way to make desktop items open with a single click - without changing the settings for file explorer? I know you can enable this behavour in File>Options>General, but that affects File explorer as well and I only want that for desktop icons. Is this possible? This would be extremely useful on my Surface tablet.

File Explorer Options are global settings. There is no pick and choose that I am aware of.
