Dictation is now available in OneNote for Windows and Web

  • Staff
Hi, Office Insiders! My name is Sofia Thomas, and I’m a Product Manager for the Office Voice team. I’m excited to share that Dictation is now available in OneNote for Windows and OneNote for the web!

Dictate in OneNote

Leverage the power of your voice to conquer the blank page and capture notes at the speed of thought with dictation in OneNote. The Dictate feature is supported in more than 50 languages!

Now it’s easy to break away from the keyboard and stay in the flow by using Dictate with AI-backed voice commands to add, format, edit, and organize your text. Over the next few months, we’ll be adding new voice commands as well as some that are already available in other Office apps to OneNote.

How it works

  1. To launch the dictation experience in OneNote, click the Dictate button on the Home tab.

Home tab with Voice button highlighted
  2. Click the Dictation Settings button to adjust your preferences.
  3. Start speaking to create your notes.
  4. When you’re done dictating, say “stop dictation” or click the Stop Dictation button on the Dictation tab.

Known issues

  • Not all voice commands currently available in OneNote for the web or in Word across platforms are available in OneNote for Windows (such as formatting and lists). Click the Help button on the Dictation toolbar to see which commands are supported on that platform.
  • Some supported languages are considered Preview Languages, and may have lower accuracy and/or limited punctuation support. For a complete list, please check the More Information > Spoken languages supported section in this help topic.

Scenarios to try

Here are a few situations where you might want to try Dictate in OneNote. You want to:
  • Take a break from typing up your notes from a lecture or meeting.
  • Have a great new idea and want to instantly capture it while you multitask.
  • Insert a long section of handwritten notes quickly into your OneNote notebook.
Here are a few scenarios to try:
  • Delete a mistake by saying “delete that” or “undo.”
  • Say “Show help” to view additional commands to try out.
  • Take a break and stop dictating by saying “pause dictation.”

Tips and tricks

  • Click the Help button on the Dictation toolbar to view a list of supported commands for your language.
  • If you would prefer not to speak the punctuation marks, click the Dictation Settings button on the Dictation toolbar, and then click the Enable auto-punctuation toggle.
  • If you notice accuracy issues, make sure that you are speaking clearly and ensure that there is no background noise.

Requirements

To use Dictate in OneNote, you must have:
  • A stable internet connection.
  • A working microphone (enable microphone permissions if prompted).

Privacy

The Dictate feature analyzes your data with intelligent services. You can access the Microsoft Privacy Statement for additional details on data security.

Availability

We will be rolling this feature out to all users of OneNote for the web and to Insiders running Beta Channel Version 2207 (Build 15427.10001) or later on Windows.

Don’t have it yet? It’s probably us, not you.

Features are released over some time to ensure things are working smoothly. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as an Insider, have had the opportunity to try it.

Is this really new? Cause I noted OneNote had dictation back in mid-July in my post here. In fact, I used it from my Android App. Also, OneNote for Windows 10 (prefer its dark theme) running under Windows 11 Pro RTM also has the Dictate feature.

@TraderGary,

Gary you might want to double check the "Dictate" feature is included with your Office 365 package, cause oddly enough I don't have it with mine, and just did an update prior to this post.

BTW, the "Recordings" shows my test dictation from my mobile OneNote app. It works for the most part, but as you can see it left the "e" out of "sav" (save).

Voice Dictation works just fine with my OneNote for Microsoft 365.

To be sure I just now tested it. It works just as it should.

To be clear, I'm talking "desktop" app, not online app. That said, So, you have the dictate icon for the Office 365 app as shown in Brinks tutorial? Cause I have a more recent version of Office 365 and I don't even have it

I have it in my OneNote for Windows 10, as well as my mobile app. Odd I don't have it in the "Office 365" app

Can you post an image?

Yeah, but my question was about OneNote. And the thread you posted in is about a OneNote feature, not Windows ;-)

Hope that answers your question :-)

Yeah, but my question was about OneNote. And the thread you posted in is about a OneNote feature, not Windows ;-)

Hope that answers your question :-)
Fair enough. My apologies.

Let me then ask a thread specific question, not necessarily directed to you, about using the OneNote voice dictation feature.

What is the difference between using voice dictation built-in to the application and using voice dictation using "[Windows Key] + H"? Does built-in voice dictation add something one doesn't get when using "[Windows Key] + H" voice dictation?

Well, let me answer it this way.... being OneNote is also a "mobile" and web app", it (to me) makes sense to have a dictation feature built directly into the app. Additionally, your dictation is directly saved in OneNote. Not "Windows" or anywhere else ;-)

Anyway, I'm not sure why I have to justify a decision Microsoft made. At the end of the day, if you feel it's a useless feature, don't use it.

In no way was I asking you to justify a decision that Microsoft made! That's not the point. It's just that I never gave it a thought that voice dictation was or wasn't a built-in part of OneNote. The two devices I use constantly every day are my Dell XPS Windows 11 laptop computer and my Pixel 6 Pro Android 12 phone. I use OneNote every day on both devices. OneNote is integral to the way I work, and I use voice dictation with OneNote a lot on both devices. I simply thought that voice dictation was part of Windows and was also part of Android. It works beautifully on all apps on both devices.

I'll be paying close attention to how voice dictation is made part of the OneNote app and I should be able to answer my own question in time.

Thanks, Dru2, for your experience and expertise!

See post #4, para "BTW..." That test sentence was dictated from the OneNote app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra device. It missed spelled "save" (sav). And as I said in post #2, dictation was already part of the mobile app, as well as OneNote for Windows 10.

Odd though that wasn't included in the Office 365 app. I "guess" that's what Brink's post is about?

And thanks, but I'm hardly an expert on OneNote. I just started using it a little over a year as I was curious about what it did and how I could use it. Didn't know about voice dictation until last month when someone asked about a journal. Still have a lot to learn.

Anyway, we're good (y)
