Disable Windows Hello In Chrome?

My account is local not a sit in via m account

For instance, in Amazon, make sure your login settings don’t require a passkey. Mine isn’t set to use a passkey but regardless, I get those popups. Very frustrating.
Since Microsoft has been pushing passkeys, sites like Google & Amazon seem to be trying to pass (push) that on to users. At least that’s what I think ATM. I am not sure of the agenda. They say it’s for our security but I cant see why a passkey is any safer than a standard 2FA one time password.

I am going to try this when I can get on my PC

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select
    More
    Settings > Autofill & Passwords > Google Password Manager.
  3. On the left, select Settings
  4. Turn off Use Windows Hello when filling passwords
Maybe other toggle settings in here worth looking at?

I do see above that you may have already gone here but said that these settings have been removed? If that is the case (because they shouldn't be) I would consider removing Chrome from your PC using Revo Free and reinstalling Chrome to see if the settings reappear. Are you logged into Google in Chrome?

It is too soon for me to know for certain, but I think I may have resolved the same issue for myself. I searched all over and asked ChatGPT and then Google's AI. Google's AI gave me a suggestion that I think may have done the trick. I did not have Windows Hello enabled, but it suggested that if I temporarily enable Windows Hello by adding a PIN and then removing it, that might clear out the issue. If it is right, it is because Chrome might think that I have Windows Hello enabled, but because it is not enabled I am in some kind of limbo state where I can not disable the thing that is not actually enabled. I'll try to remember to post back here about how things work out.

been down this road many times. tried REG, GPEDIT and other methods. the problem is that you cannot fully disable passkey prompts without turning off windows hello (PIN). if you want to be able to log in with a pin but not deal with passkey prompts, you can use this AHK script i made that will autoclose it. problem is, it will auto close pin prompts as well. so i have made it toggleable. you can use F1 to toggle it on/off or double click the tray icon to do so. i have attached the compiled .exe. if it is flagged, you will have to allow it. here is the code that is in the compiled script:

Code:
#Persistent
toggle := false

Menu, Tray, NoStandard
Menu, Tray, Add, Enable / Disable PIN Prompts, ToggleScript
Menu, Tray, Add, Exit, ExitScript
Menu, Tray, Click, 2
Menu, Tray, Default, Enable / Disable PIN Prompts

F1::ToggleScript()
return

ToggleScript() {
    global toggle
    toggle := !toggle
    if (toggle) {
        SetTimer, ClosePINPrompt, 100
        TrayTip, PIN Blocker, ENABLED, 1
    } else {
        SetTimer, ClosePINPrompt, Off
        TrayTip, PIN Blocker, DISABLED, 1
    }
}

ClosePINPrompt:
WinClose, Windows Security
WinClose, Windows Hello
WinClose, Microsoft Edge Security
return

ExitScript:
ExitApp

I believe more and more of the major sites will require passkeys in the very near future. Right now these sites are in the "optional" stage. It's my belief that for those who do not use a pin, those sites will eventually become 2FA only. A password alone won't cut it. I darn sure don't ever want to have to use 2fa on everything.
I got tired of being nagged to set up a passkey. What I've done is switch to pin login on all my computers and ios devices (all same pin)and created passkeys to the sites who want a passkey but made those passkeys the same as my pin. I'm old and forgetful so at least that way I won't ever forget my passkeys....hopefully.

Thank you everybody for the replies. I really appreciate it. I had not even realized that you could possibly avoid doing 2FA if you have a PIN enabled. 2FA is getting adopted more and more and it is annoying to have to go check your email or phone every time you log into the website. If I can just have a PIN instead that seems like that would be a big improvement. Thank you for the tip.

@MadKnight Do not confuse a pin and a passkey. They're 2 different things.

PIN (Personal Identification Number)

  • What it is: A short numeric code (usually 4–6 digits) used to verify your identity.
  • Where it's used: Commonly for unlocking devices (phones, tablets), accessing bank accounts, or authenticating apps.
  • Stored: Locally on the device.
  • Security level: Basic. Vulnerable to brute-force attacks if not combined with other security measures.
  • Tied to: The device. Your PIN doesn’t work on other devices.

🗝️ Passkey

  • What it is: A modern, cryptographic replacement for passwords. It uses public-key encryption to authenticate you.
  • Where it's used: Logging into websites, apps, and services—especially those supporting passwordless login (like Google, Apple, Microsoft).
  • Stored: Securely on your device or in your cloud account (e.g., iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager).
  • Security level: Very high. Resistant to phishing, replay attacks, and data breaches.
  • Tied to: Your identity across devices. You can sync passkeys across platforms.

Have a look in chrome://settings/passwords
Scroll to the Passkeys section.
Turn off:
"Offer to use passkeys"
"Sign in automatically using passkeys"

I haven’t had a chance to try anything because I am separated from my PC for a short while after an operation, but have been scouring the net because it’s bloody annoying. I bought a fingerprint scanner so if all else fails I’m just going to use it.

Another thing I found that may or may not work (yet to try):
Disable WebAuthn via Chrome Flags
  1. In Chrome, go to:

    Code:
    chrome://flags/#enable-web-authentication-conditional-ui

  2. Set this flag to Disabled:
    • “Enable conditional UI for Web Authentication API”
  3. Restart Chrome.
This will (allegedly) disable the UI that triggers prompts like Windows Hello on supported sites.
new flag that seems to disable it completely on Amazon, etc:

Enable automatic passkey upgrades in Google Password Manager

set to Disabled
