Solved DIY build replace motherboard and activation

Four years ago I purchased ASUS PRIME B560-PLUS motherboard, Intel Core i5-11400 CPU, 16 GB of DDR4 memory,
My computer guy assembled the PC and I installed windows 11 professional.

I have damaged HMDI port and USB 3 port. (rough handling)

I have purchased a motherboard with the same description from China from SPCP computer accessories. Total cost about 100 Canadian dollars. (I found this supplier with Copilot)

I have extracted the installed key with ShowKey Plus

If I replace the motherboard in my desktop will it be activated with the key?

ShowKey Plus will display a generic Windows 10/11 Pro product key, and that key cannot be used to activate Windows again.

You can still reactivate Windows after replacing the motherboard using the Activation Troubleshooter, as long as your Windows license is linked to your Microsoft account.

What kind of warranty do you get?

How do you know if this supplier is reputable?

NOTE TO EVERYBODY: doing some poking around it seems that this supplier isn't selling current generation motherboards, for example no AMD AM5 socket boards.

I had no problem reactivating Windows on each of two computers after replacing major hardware.
Each computer got a totally different motherboard, CPU, GPU & RAM but kept the original drives.
Both computers use a local user account. None of my Window keys are link to my Microsoft account.
The original copies of Windows were Retail. Did that make a difference after major hardware upgrades?
Note the only copies of Windows I purchased were:

Windows 10 Professional Retail

The original asus motherboard are available USED at Ebay and other sites. This motherboard may be a clone. A no name clone is available on Amazon for 300 dollars. I will keep it as a backup

I remembered incorrectly.

I downloaded ShowKeyPlus. On my system, ShowKeyPlus displays the product key that Windows is activated with under "Installed Key."

If Windows is no longer activated after replacing the motherboard, enter your product key.

If you receive the following error, then use the Activation Troubleshooter (this only works if, before replacing the motherboard, the activation status was "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.")

"We can't activate Windows on this device because the product key was already used on another device. If you think it wasn't used on another device, select Troubleshoot below. Error code: 0xC004C008"

Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot > I recently changed hardware on this device > This is the device that I'm using at the moment > Activate.

At the time of release of Windows 8 Microsoft was offering keys for about 40 dollar. I purchased a few and have used them on 3+ computers. It worked for win 8 , 10 and 11 if I enter the key when doing a fresh installation.

The board arrived on time and I took it to computer store in strip mall. He replaced the motherboard and it is working perfectly. He has purchased old version boards from this supplier and had no issues. This is legitimate business.

After the board was replaced, I could not activate windows and the troubleshooter did not work.

I had purchased a few windows keys when win 8 was released in 2012. This key worked for win 8 , 10, 11 after replacing motherboards until 2021. It does not work now.

I purchased a new win11 pro from Best Buy. I did not want to take any chances and go for the cheap keys.

I might have mucked up the activation for this reason.

I have a dedicated separate ssd for windows 11 which I call "practice". Both windows were inactivated after replacing the motherboard.

I entered the new key on my working windows 11 and then checked the practise win 11. It was activated!

Some time ago, I was having trouble with a motherboard and ended up getting a completely different motherboard along with an Athlon 3000G processor. I was fortunate to have a Microsoft account and when the W10 wouldn't activate, I got on the phone to them and explained what had happened. They kindly activated it even after changing the motherboard, processor and to the DDR4 that was needed. As luck would have it, I had accidentlly bought a low end Athlon 3000G which was compatible with W11 and it has been using the free upgrade to W11pro ever since.
