Do I need to do anything for security. I am only average level with Windows 21H2 22000.556

Win Defender + Free Avast for security purposes. Then I have Free Malwarebytes that scans once a month.

Who runs real time protection with Avast enabled, Defender or Avast?

Windows security runs my real time protection while I run MBAM free a few times a day.

I have 2 macrium images on two separate drives, one is disconnected in case of ransomware attack and while the other is updating actively this other is updated weekly..

Kaspersky headquarters is in Moscow, and they have connections with the Russian Military. The US Government has banned the use of Kaspersky software citing ties to the Russian government and espionage attempts.

Kaspersky, for its part, derided the FCC’s concerns as political.

“Kaspersky is disappointed with the decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to prohibit certain telecommunications-related federal subsidies from being used to purchase Kaspersky products and services,” the company said. “This decision is not based on any technical assessment of Kaspersky products – that the company continuously advocates for – but instead is being made on political grounds.”

“Kaspersky maintains that the US Government’s 2017 prohibitions on federal entities and federal contractors from using Kaspersky products and services were unconstitutional, based on unsubstantiated allegations, and lacked any public evidence of wrongdoing by the company,” Kaspersky added.

Whether you choose to (or continue to) use Kaspersky to protect your PC is up to you, but the FCC’s statement is a strong advisory that you should have concerns. You can consult both of our lists of top antivirus programs for alternatives.

As per others have posted; Windows Defender is fine for the vast majority of home users, keep system updated, make regular backups, stay away from cracked software and you're pretty much good. Perhaps tinker with DNS, Quad9 being my choice but YMMV.

I read somewhere that Kaspersky did move most of the important operations to Switzerland,
yet, it is a personal decision as to which security you prefer.

"Best Antivirus is between the two ears"
Somebody said that, anyway, if you are a normal windows user Defender is enough.
But if you are one of those who visits all the dubious sites, experiments with a variety of programs, installing/uninstalling, probably you need an additional safety program. Saving important files to another disk or the cloud and frequent imaging and keeping will be useful.

I would amend that to "If you are an intelligent Windows user, Defender is all you need".
