GMKtec K11 device - Windows 11 Pro is ‘Activated with a digital licence’. I can find a ‘Default key’ but I believe it is the digital licence that is needed if ever I need to reinstall Windows.
ShowKeyPlus shows ‘OEM key not present in firmware’.
I first set the device up with a local account. It was set up with no internet access so I didn’t go through registering the device with Microsoft. The digital licence must have been activated by the OEM (GMKtec) prior to purchase by me.
Q1 - I create backups using Macrium Reflect v8.1 but do I need to get my device’s Win 11 Pro licence linked to my Microsoft account as well?
Q2 - If so, then how does one do this?
Q3 - Or can I carry on as-is as long as I make regular backups?

I forgot to say that in my MS Account the option to 'Add device' does not allow me to add my (GMKtec) Windows device. It seems only to apply to 'Surface, Xbox...' and it would not accept the serial number of the GMKtec device.
I only see my Dell device registered there.
MS AC shows only Dell.webp

@wiganken
our desktop 2 system are activated by digital licence but both our systems are not registered on our online outlook accounts
i can not give any reason why they are not on our online accounts but everything is working just fine.

both systems use local accounts but have our outlook/hotmail email address added within the settings.

ChatGPT:

Windows uses a so-called digital license (formerly called “digital entitlement”) which links the license to your computer’s hardware. In practice it works like this:

When a PC has at some point installed and activated a genuine Windows 10 or Windows 11 (or upgraded a genuine Windows 7/8 → 10/11), Microsoft’s activation service records the hardware ID of your device on its servers.

After that you can reinstall Windows on the same PC without entering a product key. As soon as Windows gets an internet connection, it checks Microsoft’s servers to see whether a valid digital license already exists for that hardware. If one is found, Windows is activated automatically — even if during the installation you selected “I don’t have a product key.”

Exception: If you change major hardware components (for example, the motherboard), Windows might see the device as “new” and then the license may not transfer automatically. However, activation should still succeed via your Microsoft account, if the license is linked to it.

You can check whether the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account or only tied to your hardware as follows:

Settings → System → Activation

Under “Activation state” you should see one of the following:

  • If it says “Windows is activated with a digital license”, the activation is based only on the device’s hardware.
  • If it says “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account”, then the license follows your account and can more easily be transferred to another PC or reactivated after a major hardware change. If for example you change the motherboard, you can use the Activation troubleshooter:

Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot (the button is visible only if Windows is not activated) → “I recently changed hardware on this device” → “This is the device that I'm using at the moment” → Activate.

I have purchased multiple used hardware(PCs) and upon a clean install these systems(mostly) activate with a digital license so no need for them to be associated with any MS acct.
However the gotcha is with the way MS stopped using previous Win7/8 Keys with a system that was upgraded via previous Win7/8 upgrade path. A clean install you will lose the license key and have to purchase new keys.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.

It should still activate with a clean install.

You might get into difficulty if you swap in an os from a different machine. It might think there is a hardware change and you can be up the creek. It happened to me.

I had been regularly swapping a disk with win11 installed between 2 different machines. Then all of a sudden it claimed hardware change and refused to activate. Even worse, putting the disk back into the first machine also claimed hardware change.

Eventually managed to get the activation back for the first machine via ms account.

But not for the second machine. I rang and the ms guy said because it was the free upgrade nothing they can do if it is not in your ms account.

It only appears to happen with Win7/8Free upgrade.

That was a while ago. They might have fixed it since but I wouldn't bet on it

@Celery - Thanks for that info. I particularly found the following extract easy to grasp and it answers my query. I'll call this solved.

Digital licence is linked with hardware ID.webp

As long as you remain on the same build, e.g - Home to Home, Pro to Pro, you don't need to buy a new licence.

If you want to move to a higher build, like from Home to Pro, from Pro to Pro for Workstations, Pro to Enterprise, Pro to LTSC - you will need to buy the required licence for that build and activate it.

That's how digital licensing works with Windows.
