HP ProDesk 600 G3

Greetings,

Hope this is the right place to post.

I received 2 identical HP ProDesk 600 G3 desktops from my wife that were used before they got laptops.

These desktops always had issues from the get with all the corporate garbage on the. Literally 4 minutes boot to windows 11.

Anyhow, I wanted to see if I can refurb them and use for backups.

Both have Seagate 1 TB HDD, cd rom, I7-770cpu's and

2 x Capacity: 8GB (16GB total for the pair)
Type: DDR4 Unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM), 1Rx8 (Single Rank)
Speed: 2400 MHz (PC4-2400T)
CAS Latency: CL17 If that matters.

I though I would beef up the ddr4 on both pc's, so I stripped 1 pc down and installed 3x 8GB Goldkey DDR4 UDIMM 2666 MHz PC4 21300. I undeerstand 3 sticks is not ideal.

Anyhow, I went to boot and no go, 3 long beeps and 2 short beeps 4 times in a row. So, took 1 stick out reconfigured to slots a and b and the same issue. I dinally used 1 stick and the pc boots. This is not ideally what I want so I stripped the other HP ProDesk 600 G3 and took the 2 sticks and put all 4 (all identical samasung) in the pc that I trie to put in 3x Goldkey sticks.

I go to boot the pc and the same set of beeps happens and no post. It will post with just 2 sticks of Samsung.

I have powered down and and discharged the power switch and also cleared cmos, but no go.

The bios is HP and is pretty generic, the only info on the MB i can find is this...

All I can say is that HP is extremely picky with memory.

Keep trying, but ensure the RAM slots are perfectly clean before attempting again. Double check this.

Yes but even a modest size ssd could cost more than the machine is worth. Unless you have a couple of spare ssd lying around.

2x8gb should be enough if you are having trouble with 3 or 4 sticks.

3 Long, 2 Short Beeps points to a ram issue. The RAM stick may be loose, dirty, or faulty. Try removing and reseating the memory modules.Check for damage to the ram slot. Replace the stick.
Does the stick match what is in the other slots?

If the PC doesn't like to boot with 4 sticks of the RAM that shipped with the series, the obvious solution would be to set a lower RAM clock in the BIOS settings. (That's not necessarily the issue, but it could be.) I have no idea whether the ProDesk 600 G3 models have such a BIOS setting.

Another strategy would be to try a pair of larger capacity DIMMs. The ProDesk 600 G3 may not like DIMMs larger than 8GB, though.

You'll have to decide how much time and funds you're prepared to spend on old PCs with Gen6 or Gen7 CPUs. (Unsupported by Win11.)
