Do rechargeable batteries die if they are never charged

What I mean is,I have a laptop(replace it with a new one)and a game controller(spare one)that I don't think I will use anytime soon(maybe never)
If a battery was not charged and used for a very long time,does the battery looses its ability to hold charge

simple answer
yes ..
it will lose its charge and unless you know how to re-activated it
it will become as dead as the dodo.

the way to re-activated it is use another charged battery or batteries of a similar type
and connect + to + and - to - for a few minutes. then you will be able to re-charge the dead battery.

i have done this several times with different sorts/types of batteries.

Sure it's necessary other battery? Electricity is electricity and the charger has the same voltage as another charged battery? Some years ago I bought my 1st smartphone, I was using a "non smart" one until then. I left it like 3-4 years w/o use, but I decided to revive it with a cheap pre-pay card. After plugging in the charger it took a lot to react, maybe several hours I don't recall exactly, but it reacted (the normal behaviour of this phone is to show an animation of a battery charging for some seconds just after connecting the charger, or while charging if you press a button, or a drawing of the battery charged if it's finished). I wouldn't expect a different behaviour connecting other electricity source at the same voltage.

This battery is quite small in capacity and the charger control by the phone shouldn't be very complex (just cut the source when the battery has reached its voltage I suppose). Maybe in other situations you have to leave the control aside.

I've done the same process using a bench DC power supply. I set the current limit to a couple hundred milliamps to start so as not to overly stress the battery.
