Does anyone use McAfee on here?

On the flip side, everybody who isn't using McAfee (which is just about all of us regulars), could just say nothing and then his post would have made it appear we were ignoring him.

Or we could have just responded with "no", which would have also been ultimately unhelpful.
Either way, that is also unhelpful. And the comment you made makes you look like you should not be helping people on this forum. I did go back to Bitdefender through my NETGEAR Orbi Armor subscription. So I thank the person who said to do that. It seems to be better now. I do think it was a conflict with the update for McAfee. Bitdefender scanned the computers and found no issues just as McAfee said. I will post with an update later.

I've been helping people on these forums since sevenforums.com.
What comment in particular are you talking about? I assume the one about the fact that not many people on this forum run McAfee? If so, it wasn't intended to be rude or sarcastic, but I believe it to be a true factual statement that not many here, or least not the regulars that frequently answer, comment and provide advice are likely running McAfee. I could very well be wrong, but we don't see a lot of discussion around here revolving around McAfee...so I don't think it's used that often. Sorry if that upset you, wasn't meant as any type of insult.

    Defender.
I use to turn Defender off but it seems like MS updates often comes in and changes my settings. So, I just forget about it. I ran a scan in Defender once and it took a very long time to digest the results, so that was set aside. On my older Dell laptop I do turn Defender off because of not the PC runs slower than a snail sometimes. I am sure it is a conflict in the Norton's Defender scheme of things.
Strange about Defender coming back on after updates. I have my Defender disabled for Virus and Threat Detection because I run Norton. Defender has never come back on after an update. It does run for other tasks, though.

@FreeBooter said it best ! And they will conflict with each other at some point in time !
It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

You know, I came here for help. I did not come here for your hateful opinions. We have our own opinions to what we like. I like McAfee and I am staying with McAfee.
Sad to say, but you will not get any credible support in these forums as most here have a negative view of McAfee whether true or not. And as you've found, all you're attacked for using something "you" prefer to use. I do not agree with most of the responses you got, but it is what it is.

My attitude is whether we agree with whatever software a person uses, if they ask for help give it. If all you're going to do is piddle on a person for using something you don't agree with, don't post as it's extremely unhelpful and extremely disrespectful.

Anyway, I have no answers to your questions as I only use Windows Security (Defender). Suggest you visit McAfee's forums.

Good luck.

    This is my backup system.
The best protection in my opinion is Defender and image backup.
I never try to fix an infected OS. If I notice any slow down, I normally just revert back to my recent clean image backup.
Never failed for the past decade.

You may be right and I just messed up, but a recent update changed a few things that seemed strange. I will turn Defender off and see what happens. I've never been a fan of it. But, then, the last due that sent ,me a virus got a reply with a CRT burner that didn't end well for him. That was a long time back around the time I stopped hacking.

You know, I came here for help. I did not come here for your hateful opinions. We have our own opinions to what we like. I like McAfee and I am staying with McAfee. Microsoft Defender, I used for about a week, and I never really liked it. Defender has had a lot of backlashes over the years. There is nothing wrong with McAfee. Stop criticizing me for asking for help. This forum used to be so kind, now, y'all are not kind at all. With this being said, I don't think I will be coming back here and yes, I have been a long-time member of this forum as well as its sister forums. Windows 7 Help Forums, Windows 8 Forums, Windows 10 Forums, and Windows 11 Forum. I am appalled at how you all reacted to this post.

How can anyone help - when you're using a 3rd party app nobody seems to use (from what i notices so far - or at least that's true in general). Even more than that, the ones who encountered it - had bad experiences with it (thus, don't get why you took it personally - since all the hate was directed at the app). The thing is... maybe not the app developers (most definitely) - but McAfee's business team was (and probably still is) - pretty good at their job - so good that they sign a lot of contracts with OEM Companies (Dell, HP, etc) - and thus McAfee end-up on a lot of laptops/PC. And if your job has anything to do with maintenance - it's impossible not to hate McAfee - for all the times it end-up being the main culprit slowing down a system or causing all kinds of issues (even BSOD). It acted like bloatware - and thus, a common practice among those who handle maintenance is to uninstall McAfee (and other bloatware installed/included by the OEM). Which helped both the customer - and the tech department responsible for that laptop/pc's maintenance (helped with peace of mind).

That being said, this is not just a matter of taste (as if you like Pineapple Pizza - and the rest of us don't or even hate it) - but empirical evidence with the product in question. Also, this might be Windows 11 forum but as mentioned above - McAfee AV is a 3rd party tool - which for whatever reason it's mostly avoided. Maybe in the past - all your inquiries were related to apps, settings or issues - that were actually somehow common among the community. But when it comes to 3rd party apps - it's usually recommended to check the official forums first, in thus case: McAfee Support Community

So hey, if you like the app - use it. Other recommendations are just that (recommendations). Believe it or not - they were trying to help - but that's only way they knew how in this particular case (by recommending a different product).

The point I was trying to make of @pparks1’s post is that they said that when I submit a post or question, my post should be ignored or not even looked at/addressed when a solution is needed. It was rude! That makes it seem like y’all don’t want to help at all. I hope another forum member does not get attacked this way.

Okay, so you missed my point. I was not responding to you either, I was responding to Trevo.

1687971806687.png

Trevo said you had asked does anybody here use McAfee and then said our responses might not have been impressive to you as nobody provided a solution to his questions.

We did respond, in a way you didn't like, as the general opinion was we don't use that product but instead use another product.

The point I was trying to make is that an alternative to our actual responses showing we cared and wanted to suggest another product, would have been to have just said NO or to simply not respond because we didn't have anything useful to say with respect to your question. I would have felt that just saying No, or simply ignoring your request would have been far worse than actually offering our advice and suggestions of using another product. You took offense to the way we respnded, the flip side would have been that he hadn't responded at all...which would have been just as unhelpful to you and arguably even wore.

I did not attack you, nor was I suggesting that people not respond to you. I simply presented another direction this conversation could have gone if we were all truly rude and unhelpful. Instead, we've all tried to explain our viewpoints and positions. We care more than you think.

I know you all care. Y’all have helped me in lots of ways with my computing experience. I did take one of the forum members’ advice and I went back to Bitdefender. Although, it is through my NETGEAR Orbi system. Seems to be okay today. I will not use Defender. I just cannot bring myself to like it. There was a Windows update yesterday also. Maybe, that also fixed things. I was just feeling attacked. My apologies!

Let me ask; how do I turn Windows Security (Defender) off? Due to changes and updates none of the instructions are clear. I went to Virus & threat protection, then see image below, and that is turned off. It seems simple enough, but the guru advice is anything but concise. Is that all?

It seems obvious enough, but MS has a way of making things not so simple. Maybe some English classes are in order.

When a 3rd party AV is installed Windows Defender active protection is automatically turned off, you don't need to do so yourself.

However, a scan is not the same thing as active protection, there is no conflict in performing a scan with Defender while your current AV is providing your active protection. So Defender has an option to perform periodic scans (it never hurts to have a second opinion). This option is only shown in 'Virus and threat protection' when a 3rd-party AV is installed and has turned off Defender, so seeing it there is your reassurance that Defender's active protection has been turned off.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

The point I was trying to make of @pparks1’s post is that they said that when I submit a post or question, my post should be ignored or not even looked at/addressed when a solution is needed. It was rude! That makes it seem like y’all don’t want to help at all. I hope another forum member does not get attacked this way.
1st time i hear of this pparks1 guy, 1st time i see your post too. We're random strangers on the internet, if you have an issue with someone - there's a block/ignore function. Since i joined this forum i blocked 2 people "where 1 started harassing me (throwing insults just cause i disagreed with his him "with proof") - while the other was stressing me out (either trolling me by consistently quoting my posts and playing dumb or the real deal)". If he actually attacked you - as you claim - you can even report him. On the other hand - if you're assuming stuff that's not there and overly-sensible about it - that's an issue on its own (a modern virtual issue part of the "cancel culture" - where on the internet - overly-sensible people using an anonymous alias - are trying to character assassinate an individual that either disagrees with them or they simply don't like the one in question for whatever reason).

If a visitor would read the posts from this topic - one thing is clear: the majority seem to have issue with the product in question. Also, from anyone who posted- there's not a single McAfee user. That being said... doesn't seem to be anyone in a position to help with this particular app - other than making recommendation of their own. It's why i recommended the official forum. Furthermore "a paid antivirus license - also comes with customer support" . That's part of the package you paid for. There's free versions of multiple AV where the customer support - is among the services missing - as in - limited to the paid version. On forums - everything is pro-bono (people using their spare time - to help or talk about x subject - cause it's not always useful information). Doesn't seem fair to have high expectations either (of free services - when normally we have to pay for every service in this world). That's like going to a food bank and complaining that they don't serve your favorite dish or even dislike it (and for that reason - you feel attacked by the service there) - while you afford to go to a restaurant where they serve that exact dish.

Does anyone use McAfee on here?

I have subscribed to McAfee (McAfee LiveSafe) on my three HP computers. One of them (My mother's) has received the new updated version of the McAfee antivirus software which is: Version: 1.10.231 and the Release name: 16.0 R110.

Since that version was released and installed, when I run a quick scan in which I do every day to just make sure all is well, the scan takes forever. The recent version of McAfee was not like this. It completed quick scans or for any scan for that matter quickly. So, has anyone experienced this that uses McAfee?

Another issue I have is that Microsoft Edge on my HP Laptop & my mother's HP Desktop has been freezing up a lot here lately. I did check for updates for Microsoft Edge, and the Edge browsers were updated but that did not fix the issue with my Laptop in which has been happening for a while on it before the HP desktop had the problem. My HP All-in-One touchscreen desktop seems to be okay with Microsoft Edge for that matter.

Thank you for all of your help!

PS. Sorry, I haven't been on in a while. I haven't had any major issues with my computers or Windows 11 really. Thank you all for keeping me aboard!
McAfee is a waste of money. It's also a RAM hog as well. MS Defender does just as good, although I don't use it. . I use Malwarebytes, and I don't have antivirus running 100% of the time anyway. I know what not to click on. IF on the rare occasion I do get a virus, I don't mess with scanning. I just do a complete fresh install that way I know I got everything. . lol

Hi-
You might checkout Malwarebytes. I use both Malwarebytes and Defender together and I am very satisfied with the combined protection each offers. If you decide to Install Malwarebytes, make sure you carefully review the settings on both apps. I have used both Norton and McAfee in the past and both work well. However, I found that Malwarebytes and Defender working together give me the best bang for my buck and good protection for both of my Win 11 PC's. Good Luck.

I have used McAfee during the trail period on a new Laptop.
No problems at all, but you do have to configure it so as not to be intrusive, same as any AV.
That is likely to be the problem as it is a number of settings you have to look at, in conjunction with a number of linked Windows 11 settings.

On installing the new updated version some default settings may have changed or reset.
3 different machines are highly unlikely to have identical settings.

The sheer number of these settings means I cannot give a detailed reply in text, it would take forever.

After the trial I uninstalled it, however that was because I was not going to pay for extending the use.

The same principles apply to the Edge Web Browser, a lot of settings need looking at and maybe clearing caches and some Cookies, again this will vary on 3 machines.

I do see your point about 50+ odd, daft, largely irrelevant, and off topic replies, very common on message boards/forums.
