Does CHKDSK work on large HD's

Prices have dropped but not by that much. My guess is that even though you bought the drive through Walmart.com the drive is a phony and is being supplied by a third party seller and not by Walmart itself. The same thing happens at times on places like Amazon.

I'll say! I've personally gotten bad FLASH disks from Amazon. I was 99% sure they were bogus, I just made sure they were returnable and got a couple. Sure enough, they were fakes and I returned them. One only has to read Steve Gibson's account of the dirty dozen FLASH drives he bought from Amazon, every one of them was phony!

not sure why your system takes ages

Here's my set of disks online

OK currently running Linux but if I run Windows and have these disks attached in Windows chdsk runs quickly enough !!. NTFS formatted disks BTW work for R/W both in Linux and Windows of course.

Boy this thread is an eye opener. I had no idea legitimate stores like Walmart and Amazon were selling fake drives unknowingly. \


After testing both of my possibly failing USB HD's actually both are ok after using disk Genius instead of CHKDSK. The problem was an encrypted folder with 6000 files that I may have accidentally encrypted a while ago. I finally got them unencrypted, needing to move it to an older computer which did the original encrypting.

NVMe drives will run far quicker than a SATA or USB disk for obvious reasons.

I have read internet post from people who bought phony drives from major retail stores. It never happened to me but I do see where it would be possible.

I finally got the 4 T HD from Walmart for $9.86. It was shipped from China. It's an empty plastic case for a HD - ha ha. I just sent it back to Walmart for a full refund and told them either this was a mistake or fraud.

I seriously doubt they've learned their lesson! Caveat emptor is the phrase of the day when buying Chinese electronics! You have to know what you're buying and make sure it's returnable!

From my experience, Anker is a very reputable company with great products that just work and work. Orico is quite the opposite. Crappy products that often fail, and tech support that doesn't reply to emails.
