Solved Does leaving Malwarebytes running interfere with Macrium imaging?

I use the Quit Malwarebytes option in the context menu of the Malwarebytes icon before I run a Macrium full disk image of my main disk. I was just wondering whether I actually need to do that, or does MR just run successfully while MWB is running?

Anybody know for sure?

I have never turned off MWB before imaging and have never had any problems.

Hi,
You should run a full scan before imaging but no mbam shouldn't affect imaging

I exclude all services by using reflect winpe usb recovery media to create system images and of course use it to restore system images as well

I think it's best to exclude windows from interrupting imaging to along with all third partyware.

I never disable my antivirus app (Windows Defender) either when running my backup apps.

But I do exit my other apps before running my backup apps. Although Macrium Reflect runs VSS, I seem to notice that it runs a bit better right after a reboot. Moreover, I also run other backup apps that do not rely on VSS.

But I sometimes I forget to take the precautions in the previous paragraph and nothing bad has ever happened either.

Thank you all for weighing in on this. The consensus is clear about the lack of necessity for stopping MBAM. And I am in full accord with the idea that doing any active computing while creating an image is bad practice. For me, an image of my entire Disk 0, which contains both my Windows system C: drive and all of my third-party apps (mostly portable) takes less than three minutes, and doing a separate image of just my D: drive (all of the aforementioned apps) takes just over 30 seconds. I am not inconvenienced at all by waiting for my images to finish before I carry on with my work on the machine. I love my Macrium Reflect!

Hi,
Good then get used to using the winpe or winre recovery media for doing the imaging tasks
One day you'll likely need it so get familiar with the boot recovery media process.

Hmmm i usually just run a Full scan with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes prior to doing my imagining in Windows 11, never thought of using the Recovery USB to Do the image of the drives, might try that for my next one coming up on December 12th.

Should my Macrium Images be quicker with the recovery usb to my external 8TB drive?

Be first time really using the Recovery USB since making it, (gonna update it first though, haven't in a while)

Hi,
I use a very old winpe matter of fact I've used the same usb winpe on four different machines with nothing but success those other systems also have their own usb winpe to use so having extras is just backup to.

Using winpe recovery media I believe is way more reliable, this way has never failed to verify a system image just created or restoring one made later "which I do a lot"

Doing this crucial chore in the os creating and verifying has failed on me before so this is why I stopped wasting my time with it between reflect updates and windows updates the, who's fault is it, who cares rule them both out !!!

If a system image fails the verifying process "always verify after creating a system image" in the os or winpe recovery method I sure wouldn't trust it to restore properly when needed.
I sure wouldn't restore a system image in the os, 11's new obnoxious security active lol
So get used to your winpe recovery media you may need it sooner that you think.

Except my Image backup was awfully slow with my 8TB External doing it the usb recover windows pe method for some reason. 2 hours to do C 500GB M.2 NvMe SSD, 2 Hours to Game SSD drive, and 3 Hours to Image Data drive Mostly 4TB Storage drive. Of course if i don't have to image the other drives, then might be a bit faster, but i've always imaged every drive lol

Currently with Free Malwarebytes, but buying a 3 Computer pack hopefully soon as Christmas Arrives

Though if i get what i asked for Christmas--Western digital 8TB external, i'll see if its faster than my External Enclosure and Seagate SMR 8Tb Drive

If it is, then i'll just make Western Digital Primary backup drive, and other one secondary

**Will Test it again on PC 2 Gaming Laptop shortly here, was debating on clean install of 22H2 on Gaming Laptop as despite used to use Revo Unnstaller free to remove programs, still have alot of empty folders on the drive, no idea if was put there due to game being installed on D: drive, but why would it put empty folder on Laptops C M2 lol. Anyways might clean up PC 2, then do a new image after that, and hopefully all good.

I use the commercial (paid for) versions of both Macrium and MBAM. MBAM never causes a problem except for an occasional false positive but let's not go there.

All my backup hdd's are sata connected and then disconnected after done.
USB slow might make sure the usb drivers are on the winpe driver list.

Me too. Both. I was just wondering about the need for killing MBAM, and I know now, from a bunch of sources, that it ain't necessary. Great!
