Solved Edge in W10 vs Edge in W11 wrt 'Define'

'Define' in Edge in W10 displays a small window above the word to be defined.

'Define' in Edge in W11 displays an entire sidebar.

When reading big words, I sometimes prefer the lightweight 'define' as in W10, sometimes the heavyweight 'define' as in W11, I wish that both options can be selected on either OS.

Thanks for the comments! I got it right for my W10 machine :) Mouse over the highlighted word to be defined > I see a small square pop up with vertical triple dots > click > a bigger pop up appears as in post #2 (y)

AND

Right clicking the highlighted word to be defined displays the menu as in post #3 (y)

In other words, all is hunky dory for my W10 machine, thanks!

I still don't get it right for my W11 machine :( The best I can get so far is the following. Mouse over the highlighted word to be defined does not display the small square pop up with vertical triple dots and hence, I never arrive at the bigger pop up as in post #2 (n)

AND

Right clicking the highlighted word to be defined displays the menu as in post #3 but 'Define' is missing from the menu.

In other words, for my W11 machine I can get the sidebar (y) but I cannot get the 'Define' shown in post #2 (n)

Any ideas?

Go to settings in Edge and search for context. Turn on 'show smart actions'.

OK, I toggled both 'Show mini menu when selecting text' and 'Show smart actions' (they were both already turned on) but now I see the small menu as in post #2 although 'Define' is missing from the small menu.

The big menu as in post #3 is also missing 'Define' from the big menu.

We are making progress, but why is 'Define' missing from both the small and big menus?

My Edge version is as follows, is it supposed to have the 'Define'?

@Fabler2 Well, no luck with the toggles. I notice that in the context menus there are 3 toggles, of which 2 toggles have the exact same descriptors 'Show smart actions' but the 2 toggles can be toggled independently, which is strange.

Moreover, I notice now, that you get 'Search Bing in sidebar for ...' The word 'Bing' is missing on both my W10 and W11 machines, although Bing is the 'search engine used in the address bar' on both machines. This is also strange.

@TairikuOkami Yeah, the 2 strange things in the above may indicate a reinstall/reset. My W11 machine is a WU from W10, not a clean install. But that is for another day. At least the sidebar 'Define' works. (And on my W10 machine, both small 'Define' and sidebar 'Define' now work, which is perfect)

So, that's a day well spent!

Glad it's sorted! By the way I have Google as the default search engine in the address bar and under accessibility in Edge is also a setting that affects the other setting :zany:

The word 'Bing' is still not there in the pop up menus of my machines/Edge and upon further thought, I think it is better that way. If one changes the default search engine as in your case, then a (very minor) discrepancy arises indeed.

And yeah, with so many adjustable parameters, it is probably not possible to devise completely independent (perfectly orthogonal) settings. MS probably did its best, and it's then upon us to use it as pragmatically as possible.
