Apps Enable or Disable Auto Start Copilot on Login in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable automatically open the Copilot app at startup for your account in Windows 11.

Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered digital assistant designed to help you with a range of tasks and activities.

When you sign in to Copilot with your Microsoft account Copilot uses your Microsoft account to provide personalized assistance and access by default to a wide range of features. For example, saving and syncing your Copilot chat history on all devices you sign in to Copilot with the same Microsoft account.

Starting with Copilot app version 1.25014.121.0 for Windows 11 Insiders, a new Auto start on login setting is available that will automatically start Copilot at sign-in and run in the background with a Copilot notification icon on the taskbar system tray.

Option One

Turn On or Off "Auto start on login" Copilot in Copilot Settings


1 Open the Copilot app.

2 While in full view, click/tap on the Account button on the sidebar, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Preferences on the left side, and turn on or off (default) Auto start on log in for what you want. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Turn On or Off "Auto start on login" Copilot in Settings


1 Open Settings (Win+I). (see screenshot below)

2 Click/tap on Apps on the left side, and click/tap on Startup on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Turn On or Off (default) the Copilot app for what you want. (see screenshot below)

The Copilot app will not be listed here if you turned off Auto start on log in in Option One.

4 When finished, you can close Settings if you like.

Looks like that setting has reverse logic for now. 😂😂
When I enable this ID:45690501 the Copilot Opens on startup automatically regardless of the Setting showing off.
If I reset the ID to the default disabled, the Personalization setting for Copilot disappears and Copilot does not startup automatically. 🤷‍♂️
Work in progress, I guess. 😎

The option to disable "Open Copilot when Windows starts" is now fixed with Build 23601.1000. 👍

Same option completely missing in Canary Build 26010, with ID:45690501 enabled there is no way to stop Copilot from opening automatically at startup. 😂🤐

The menu option to turn off "Open Copilot when windows starts" is completely missing on Canary Build 26100 and the feature ID is disabled with priority:15 so that it cannot be enabled with vivetool.
Now Copilot with the new undocked style starts automatically with no option to change it.
The option below is not available in the menu, and it is on by default. 😂😝

I'm seeing the same thing in this build, and the registry setting shows it's turned off even though Copilot is still opening at startup.

I switched another system from Dev to Canary and on that it does not open automatically at startup. 🤷‍♂️
Inconsistent behavior. Still, they should allow the option to control it. 😎

Hopefully they will allow the option, if not I'm sure people smarter than i will find a solution.

There is one difference when switching from Dev to Canary 26100 at first MS EDGE is the BETA version as it is used in DEV channel, then if you check for updates on EDGE it updates to EDGE Dev.
That may or may not explain the difference in behavior. I will have to try again rebooting after MS EDGE is updated and see what happens. 😉

Edit:
I rebooted and it did not change in this case, Copilot did not open on startup. 🤷‍♂️

With 26100 They disabled this ID with priority 15 so that we cannot get the menu option back to control the startup behavior

Seems that they left the option on while getting rid of the menu. 😜🤬 They had the logic reversed back in Dec 2023. 🤣😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

The only workaround, for now, to prevent Copilot from starting automatically is by turning it off here.
But that gets rid also of the icon in the taskbar. 😜

Still, I can use this shortcut to open copilot when I want it. Win + c would do the same.

Just one more thing on this in build 26100. To stop Copilot from opening automatically at startup, both these settings must be off.
Either one on, will cause Copilot in Windows App to open at startup. 😂😂😂😝🤬
