This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the use of security questions for local accounts in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

When you set up a local account with a password via Settings, you are required by default to select and answer security questions.

Security questions provide an extra layer of protection for your local account in case you forget your password. These security questions are used to verify who you are so you can reset the password of your local account on the sign-in screen if needed.

Available security questions for a local account:
  • What was your first pet's name?
  • What's the name of the city where you were born?
  • What was your childhood nickname?
  • What's the name of the city where your parents met?
  • What's the first name of your oldest cousin?
  • What's the name of the first school you attended?
If wanted, you can disable the use of security questions for local accounts preventing them from being able to reset their password on the sign-in screen.

You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable security questions for local accounts.

One of key drivers for disabling the questions is the criticism that anybody knowing the account owner could easily answer the questions.

However, you could just use a simple coding method. Anybody can devise something simple that is still secure e.g. if your place of birth is London, just answer in reverse Nodnol.

Another way perhaps is to prefix answer with letter A say i.e. ALondon.

The possibilities are endless and do not need to be complicated at all.

Of course, you have to remember your encoding method LOL.

The odds of somebody even realising you have encoded your answer is extremely remote.

Or you could just use Netplwiz to create a new account. That won't ask for security questions.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
