Apps Enable or Disable Windows Copilot in Windows 11

Copilot_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the Windows Copilot feature on the taskbar for all or specific users in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Microsoft introduced Windows Copilot for Windows 11 back in May 2023 at the Build conference.

Starting with Windows 11 build 23493 (Dev), build 22631.2129 (Beta), and build 25982 (Canary), Microsoft is offering an early look of Windows Copilot to Windows Insiders. This first preview focuses on our integrated UI experience, with additional functionality coming down the road in future previews.

After installing Windows 10 build 19045.3754, Windows Insiders in Release Preview with eligible devices running Windows 10, version 22H2 who are interested in experiencing Copilot in Windows as soon as possible when Microsoft begins rolling it out in the near future, can choose to do so by turning on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available and Check for updates. This will be a phased launch via controlled feature rollout (CFR) over the coming months. Windows 10 Pro edition devices on version 22H2 that are managed by organizations will not be included in the initial rollout of Copilot in Windows. Windows 10 Enterprise and Education edition devices on version 22H2 will also not be included in the initial rollout of Copilot in Windows.

Windows Copilot will use the same Microsoft account (MSA) or Azure Active Directory (AAD) account used to sign-in to Windows.

Windows Copilot will appear as a side bar docked to the right where it won’t overlap with your desktop content and will run unobstructed alongside your open app windows, allowing you to interact with Windows Copilot anytime you need.

A preview of Copilot in Windows will start rolling out with the next wave of continuous innovation in Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361 on September 26, 2023. Copilot in Windows adds AI to your Windows 11 experience to help you find answers, complete tasks, and be more productive. With Copilot, people can quickly make sense of long articles on the web, craft and polish content, or create stunning images--all directly within the Windows 11 experience.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22631.2787 (RP), you can ask Copilot in Windows for help ten times when you sign in to Windows using a local account. After that, you must sign in using a verified account. These include a Microsoft account (MSA) and Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). Note that the name for Azure AD will change to Microsoft Entra ID.

References:

If you disable Windows Copilot, users will no long be able to open Copilot.

This does not affect Copilot in Microsoft Edge or Copilot in Windows Search.

The Windows Copilot feature is only available if you are signed in to Windows 11 with a Microsoft account or Azure Active Directory (AAD) account.

Copilot in Windows is not available to individuals under 13 years of age or if you are signed in with a local account.

If you would like to manually enable Copilot in Windows (in preview) now in Windows 10 instead of waiting, then see the link below for how.

Availability of Copilot in Windows: Copilot in Windows in preview is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders in select global markets. The initial markets for the Copilot in Windows preview include North America, United Kingdom and parts of Asia and South America. It is Microsoft's intention to add additional markets over time.

I still didn't get the Copilot feature in my Canary build, and had to enable it below with vivetool.

vivetool /enable /id:44774629,44776738,44850061,42105254,41655236

TIP: Don't try those numbers on 22621.2361 ...LOL
Seriously broke a lot of things. :D

I don't know if that would be true for everyone on the Public Release... or just on my comp because of other tweaks I have applied. For example, I disabled Cortana with Winaero Tweaker, long ago.

The two main things that broke were TranslucentTB and every time I clicked on the ThisPC icon on the desktop, it would restart Explorer, and NOT open up File Explorer. :-)

Long story, short... using the same command but with "disable" undid the damage.

Oh, and Copilot didn't show up anywhere. Not in... the Taskbar Settings, or System Tray, not in REVO or in Programs and Features.

LAB TESTED.png

I'm bored... I'm gonna enable Cortana, then try it again.... I have backups if worse comes to worst. :D

Ok... that didn't work either. I enabled Cortana and rebooted, then ran the vivetool command and rebooted.
The only new thing I got was the Notification "bell" icon in System Tray (which I normally don't have).
There were no notifications (on the Notifications popup)... just the bell.
I had same problem with ThisPC, but TranslucentTB didn't break.

Note: The File Explorer and Control Panel icons on the Taskbar also didn't work, and restarted Explorer if they were clicked on.

So... I disabled those numbers again, and all is back to normal.

OK... my experimenting for today is finished.

I feel kind of like Chuck Yeager, testing out a new plane. :D

Hi Brink,
Copilot Feature ID 44776738 is disabled in the Canary Image Default.
MS never actually announced Copilot for Canary.
The only ID that needs to be enabled is 44776738 the other ones are already enabled in Canary default image. 😉

Just another note about Copilot not showing up even when all the required features are enabled. Copilot is part of MS Edge.

On Dev, Beta, R.P. and Public Builds Copilot only shows up in the Taskbar and Taskbar settings if the windows user is logged in with a MS Account.
Once Copilot shows up you can switch back to a Local account and Copilot remains available.
An alternative to start Copilot in case it did not show in the Taskbar is by using this command below or just creating a Desktop shortcut for it.
Note that this was uses also in regions where Copilot was not yet available, but it only works if the required feature IDs are enabled, otherwise it will just simply open MS Edge. id:44776738 and corequisites must be enabled. 😉😎

Win + R and enter this command:
microsoft-edge:///?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar

or make a desktop shortcut:

I have Copilot, but I haven't done anything with it. Too busy with chickens, Gracie, Lucy, chemo, and now I'm building a mini greenhouse on my front porch. I want to have some greens and maybe green beans. Radishes sound good. Veggies are nice and yummy.

I have Copilot, but I haven't done anything with it. Too busy with chickens, Gracie, Lucy, chemo, and now I'm building a mini greenhouse on my front porch. I want to have some greens and maybe green beans. Radishes sound good. Veggies are nice and yummy.

Maybe I should grow some greens in the... basement (cellar).
It's been a long time since I had any greens. :D

You will need to get a plant/grow light, although they don't take all that much light. I just hope Gladys (stoma) doesn't object.

TIP: Don't try those numbers on 22621.2361 ...LOL
Seriously broke a lot of things. :D

Those numbers are fine, they were enabled by MS in current public Build 22621.2428. 😎😉
44774629,44776738,44850061,42105254,41655236.
MTestUx14 and MTestUX15 enable a bunch of other features, they are not just for Copilot.
Copilot just screws up the Desktop Layout when it opens the stupid Sidebar on the right side of the screen.
It only works if Both the Display Resolution and Scale are the recommended ones.
Also, the right side of the screen has to be empty with all the space needed for the Copilot Sidebar. 🤣

Looks like it was designed by using A.I. (aka Absolute Idiocy). 😂😂🤬😝

I think the other problems you are experiencing are not related to Copilot, they may be caused by other features enabled by MTestUx14 and MTestUx15.

Trees falling over must be a family thing. This is the tree in my sister's front yard, when she lived in Virginia.
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the 100 foot+ Oak tree that fell in her front yard in Alabama.
Both of her falling trees were due to hurricane damage...
Lucky, that big tree did not fall over the house. 😉

Yet another weird situation where MS was disabling Copilot on current public build 22621.2428.
You can see here four entries for the same id:44776738 where MS disabled it with priority:dynamic (6).
I found a way to enable it by using priority:Test which has a higher priority than the dynamic.
I have no idea why MS disabled it with priority:dynamic, I have not seen that before,
I used this command to enable it so that I could check it out. 😉🤷‍♂️
Same bug with Desktop layout screwup. 😂😂

vivetool /enable /id:44776738 /priority:test /store:both

Looks like they added the same requirement with Canary Build 25982, Copilot does not show up if the login is done with a Local User account, had to switch to MS account to get Copilot to show up on Taskbar and Settings.
Once it showed up, I switched back to Local Account and Copilot remained available.
Looks like they set something in the Registry when logging in with MS account and that registry settings does not change back when reverting to Local account.
I could not figure out exactly all the registry locations that are changed when using the MS account instead of the Local account.
I had the same issues on more than one machine also with Dev, Beta, R.P. and Public Builds. 😎🤐

I was afraid that installing under a local account might be an issue. After the install I switched to my Microsoft account, but it still does not show up there. And Edge has its own version. Really confusing.
