Hello,

Since a couple of days, Chrome sometimes give an ERR_CONNECTION_RESET message when opening a website.
After hitting refresh a couple of times, the site loads just fine.
I tested with Edge, and see the same behavior.

I have executed some of the tips stated in this topic: Windows blocking HTTP sites
But nothing seems to help.

Windows version: Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2

My other laptop, running Win10, is not having this issue at all.

Any ideas what could be causing this. It's pretty annoying.

Already tried all the Chrome suggestions. Didn't help. Also the problem is not only in Chrome. Edge behaves the same.

How are you connected to the Internet, WiFi or Enthernet? Do you have a different computer to check the Internet connection with? Call you ISP and have them reset your Internet connection from there side, also ask if there have been any other similar customer complaints for the same issue lately.

Do you recall what you were doing on your computer a day or even a few days before you noticed the issue? Have you downloaded apps, drivers, installed updates, made any changes to the system? Have you run a malware scan since this issue started?

Also, take a look in Device Manager for any driver issues.

"The connection was reset" ->Old 56K meme, when I got disconnected while browsing and I was hearing the modem redialing.
Back somewhere from 2003 to 2007, I sometimes would hear a click or pop from the modem, get the above error message from Firefox and hear the modem redialing. That's even when my 56K ISP was so reliable, so that wasn't often, normally.

But, on broadband, it's hard to tell why it's occurring, in comparison. It could be packet loss.

I was connected using ethernet all day. Never saw the issue.
Seems to only happen when connected using Wifi.

Like I mentioned, I only have this behavior on one laptop (Dell XPS). All other devices (laptops, tables, etc..) do not have any issues.
Also, other network related things work fine on the "problem" laptop, e.g. connecting to network drives, email, etc.

I checked device manager, no issues reported. The WiFi driver is the latest available.

@StevenD,

Have you tried this yet?

Use a Different DNS Server

A DNS server is what translates the readable web address like Google.com to its actual IP address. Without a proper DNS server, your device doesn’t know how to reach the website you are telling it to open. When a DNS server is misconfigured or restricted, it can cause a variety of errors such as ERR_CONNECTION_RESET. To fix it, you have to use a reputed, stable, and fast DNS server. Thankfully, there are several free DNS services out there.

For Google:

Use the following DNS server address:

Preferred DNS Server - 8.8.8.8

Alternate DNS Server - 8.8.4.4

Hello, yes already tried another DNS. This doesn't seem to be a DNS issue. Also all other devices use the same DNS without any issues.
Yesterday also noticed that site from time to time don't load completely. So the images are missing or the layout is all messed up.
Pressing refresh usually helps.

BTW, I work in industrial IT, so do know a thing or two about TCP/IP :-)

You may get this error code, when you lose connection unexpectedly, even if the server didn't send a reset packet.

Your issue looks like a very bad connection.

I do not have a bad connection. Also, the same connection (Fiber 1GB) is used for all devices.

I did some tests today with the Cloudflare WARP VPN enabled, and then the probleem seems to be gone.
Very strange.

At the top of the page you will see “Mark As Solved” it’s at the right hand side just above the first post. I believe it has a green background. Just click on it and it will add a “Solved” tick to your post.

Issue is not solved. Using WARP is a workaround, not a solution. I do not want to use a slow VPN service all the time.
