It sounds as an IT family.. I think they will appreciate a short disruption for a new fast stable internet, instead of staying on what they have now.
Some downtime to get better performance is positive.
I had a seamless switch.. I had both coax and fiber back to back for a few months, so i didn't even have a second of downtime as my router can handle multiple wan with load-balancing or as a failover.
You might have them back to back too for a short while, so you dont get any downtime.

I'm hoping to get it done while they're all in school. Just have to plug in all the main cables for Ethernet to the new router. What could possibly go wrong?? Yeah, the little wench. I went upstairs to take a nap and left my PC open. She just slid into my chair and looked at how much memory I had and decided I could spare some of it for her Mine Craft LAN party. Suddenly my PC became the server. She was only 11 when she pulled that stunt. Her excuse was, "Well, Dad you have so much RAM and you're not really using it so I. . ." Uh-huh... That's around when I decided to start showing her how to build PCs. She's very handy. She completely disassembled my gaming rig and wants to rebuild it in a different case. Since I'm not much of a gamer I thought I'd let her since she's already built a number of PCs. I did put the brakes on a pink case. We already have enough pink PCs in the house.

My mains could easily handle both coax and fibre but my budget can't. A little down time can't hurt as this transition is ultimately for the best. Our little community doesn't have a news paper and I run a web page for the folks in town to keep each other posted. Non-profit of course. I have a wife and four daughters so they keep me busy. I'm supposed to be retired. At least I'm never bored.

Depending on how much work they do in the aria, you might experience a few short hiccups the first week or so. (if they need to reboot switches or routers in the aria)

I totally understand that.. it is expensive to have two ISP's and on different systems. I can not afford higher then 250/250 at the moment.
Okay.. fun i have not written a webpage since 2009 when i had a webdesign course to fill in a few study hours when i was back in school to get a few certs and fill in some gaps.
But i considering setting up a page again... But i dont want to write code, so i need to find a nice webdesign program that is modern.. In the past way back, i used Kompozer to cheat.. then just clean up the code afterwards.

I waited for the first couple of waves to come through town before I started looking into it. Most of the town is already on fibre now. As usual, I'm the Johnny-come-lately but, hey, I never was an early adopter and my old ISP never used to be so sloppy and rude. The time has come.

Too much RAM?? How is that even possible? I'm serving a family of 5 here. lol Never hurts to have plenty of RAM on hand. Of course, these days it can get uber expensive. Glad I got mine when the gettin' was good. Alas, now the cost of helium filled drives is going up too thanks to the rising cost of silicon. A guy just can't win.

I don't even know if I can remember how to do HTML anymore. I used to make my pages from scratch and "rob" code from other sites lol. Those were the good ole days. Then universal came in and I lost interest. Besides, I'm more of a hardware kinda guy anyway. I leave the software to the girls. I mean, it's not like I don't use software but I'm no coder. I'll still run diagnostics and recovery tools but I'm a dinosaur. I'm happy to sit on the sidelines now and watch the next generation fumble the ball.

Yeah, the girls grew up on PCs. They were pounding on keys before they were potty trained. Actually, one of 'em just potty trained herself watching a YouTube video Monkey see, monkey do. There was a point at which I had to start hiding the screwdrivers because curiosity was getting the best of our little hacker girl. Fortunately, she's grown out of that stage now and has her own set of tools. The house is still standing and mother is relieved.

Normally no, but.... but all rules have an exception, otherwise it would not be a rule....... and as we women is never wrong, and she said you had to much RAM, then she has to be right on that one and that was the expedition of the rule about you cant have to much RAM. So at that moment you did have to much RAM. Ask your wife and your daughters and you will see I'm right about this one...

As for the fiber... You never have to be the first on the train, as long you at least make the train before it left.
We have a swedish expression that loses a little in translation (skynda långsamt) = rush/hurry slowly. So then if they have done the rest first, you wont experience the hiccups as when they start that kind of projects.

I started out with hardware.. after that it became software.. but i still rule on hardware and network... even i can handle software and OS's pretty good.
Then i only understand basic coding of python, C, C++ bash and some java. i think i have forgotten most of the html.. even i still understand the code i see.

*LOL* so you had to hide the tools back then.. It kind of reminds me of my childhood.. i also tinkered around with stuff.. Not computers until i became a teenager as computers was not a thing before then..
what... the house still standing... darn you had to be really good on hiding the tools then.

it seems common that a lot of people with high speed internet still have a low upload speed.
i start to think i might be spoiled with having the same upload as the download the last 20 years.

Thanks I have a feeling you will almost become as child again when you have a internet that will be faster then you can browse.
No more lagging when several of you is online at the same time.
I'm occupied with installing and tweaking a new system again.. tweaking is really evil time consuming..

See? Isn't this Chill Out room the best choice for this sort of chatter? An old guy can let his hair down here and play the fool without violating any assumed sensibilities here. I'm already a child again. This is what retirement is for, I am told. I plan on taking full advantage. TBH I don't encounter much lag on this cable but I'm definitely looking forward to better latency with fibre. I've only been dreaming of having it for 20 years. Back in the day, in the 1990's in fact, I used to install fibre optic cable for the oil industry. When I tell people this they seem surprised that it has been around that long. Well, it's been around a whole lot longer than that but perhaps not for PCs in the domestic market. Same principle for audio/visual electronics though. Optical cable has been used by audiophiles for decades so this isn't exactly "bleeding edge" tech.

Yeah it is.. I'm chatting away in the thread last one to post wins.. on page 141 (i think) i posted screenshots of my latest install.
I'm only on tenforums and here on elevenforum to be social.
In the 90's... i moved away from home 93.. got internet over phonemodem 94.. got cable internet 95.. and sat up my first lan gaming network the same year.. started to work with IT in 97 (i think it was or was it 96).. So i have a lot of fun tech-memory's from the 90's. That was when i still felt a passion for computers.

Myself, I'm gracefully fading away into obsoletion. I started on an old Commodore 64. My son and I ran gaming competitions on it. Later we graduated to a Tandy but I still had no interest in hardware or networking at that time although Windows was already a thing by then. I used my boss's Windows PC and got familiarized with 95 and 98. In '99 I got a nice Sony VAIO setup and learned Windows on one of the most disastrous operating systems Microsoft ever made: The Mistake Edition. This is where I learned a thing or two about the world of gaming. I joined the MSN Gaming Zone community and later received training as a sys op. So there was once a time when I was immersed in gaming but I soon moved on to other things.

Back in 2002 I started to learn how to do simple things such as switching out RAM and hard drives and doing basic maintainence. Eventually this led to building my own PCs. Then I discovered that there was a market in my area for oil field workers who wanted gaming rigs. Because I had a background working in the oil industry and a measure of experience building computers I became a PC repair guy. So for the next 20 years that's what I did: Building and repairing PCs. Admittedly, there's not a lot of money in it but it kept me busy and I had fun doing it. I still have fun with it but my knowledge is old and dated. I'm okay with that though. I'm here to help where I can and maybe learn a few things while I'm at it. We have some wonderful folks here, in this forum.

I have been on sick leave for almost 10 years.. But i still like to challenge myself to evolve in my knowledge.. and i do help out a few times a year on forums like this.

Fun, the classic Commodore 64 My friend had one of those, and we also played games on that one. So i can relate to you and your son gaming away for hours and hours.
I never got any computer from my parents as they said it just was a expensive hype... so i bought my first PC an secondhand Commodore PC-10 II an intel 8088 cpu for my summer work money when i was 14. MS-Dos 3 i think it was on 5,25" floppy disks. (I still have that one in working order.)
But i didn't get windows until 3.1.. so i never had windows 1 or 2.
The Windows Mistake Edition.. that was a good one
If i remember right, it was the OS that only got more unstable for every fix/update they made for it... I never used that one.. I went from 98SE to win2000 instead of ME

It sounds as you have had a fun computer history. and even more fun you still enjoying it.

Let her learn Linux, as she will have a lot of options if she ever want to work in IT... Good argument can be some games on linux with steam works better then they do in windows
almost everything is linux in the backbend.. Routers OS's, Servers, IoT devices, Android.. etc. etc. In cybersecurity is Linux and networking a must
With that knowledge in that age with that enthusiasm and energy.. she can reach the sky. (My first saying in my signature so to speak)

Oh yeah, she's on Linux already. She's been dual booting for years. Alas, her passion is baking. She wants to own her own bakery.
