Historically, the 4 best runner ups qualified for one of the European World cup slots.
Now we have a very complicated mini tournament which is kind of modelled on UK playoffs in Championship for promotion.
What makes it farcical is that 4 teams from the dire United Nations League (that nobody cares about) get parachuted into the playoffs if they do not qualify from normal second place qualifications.
We have a ludicrous situation where a team can be really poor in the qualifiers but still get a chance to get to World Cup when far better teams in 3rd place get eliminated.
A good example is Serbia who finished on 13 points but are eliminated. Sweden are currently 4th on 1 point but could end up with 4 points get parachuted into playoffs!
If we must have the minitournament (obviously allabout money), then the 4 best third places should qualify for the playoffs. As some groups have 5 teams, results against 5th team are discounted (as per previous practice).
This would be much fairer.
