Solved Explorer showing same connected drive twice

I guess there's a first time for everything but Explorer is now listing a connected drive twice - same drive letter, same contents, same response if you add or remove files regardless of which of the two entries you use. i swapped USB ports, rebooted, ran sfc and chkdsk. All was ok but dual listing persists. Any ideas?
