I have a new external USB3 JBOD enclosure that has two disks installed. There is a second unit with 3 drives that have not reported any surprise removals.

I am getting occasional errors when running robocopy command to copy a number of database backup files to a NAS mapped drive.

Thankfully robocopy has a retry function so after it automatically doing retry the robocopy successfully finishes.

When the error occurs both the two disks are reported in event viewer as having surprise removal but then are automatically back online.

chkdsk on both drives does not yield any errors.

I have tried moving the enclosure to another port on the PC but problem remains.

I have disabled the Universal Serial Bus controller entries by unchecking "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

I have spaced the two drives apart in the enclosure to improve cooling etc.

The enclosure works perfectly well when I am using it to perform weekly backups to either disk.

Could this be a Win update issue and I need to wait for a fix or is there something else I could do to remove this annoying problem?

Please let me know?

Thanks

Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.795)

Check the health report for the drives using CrystalDiskInfo utility.

Use a Different USB Port.

Turn off USB Selective Suspend Setting.

Installing the newest USB 3.0 controller drivers. The reliable way to make this update is to enter the motherboard manufacturer’s website and then download the corresponding latest chipset drivers.

Thanks for your reply, I have HD Sentinel and the disks are reported as healthy. This is a new build with new disks (I forgot to mention that), initial set up April 2022.

USB selective suspend is already disabled.

I have Gigabyte Z690M Aorus Elite AX DDR4 motherboard. I went to Gigabyte site for my motherboard and the two chipset entries with newer dates that April this year were:
- Intel Management Engine Firmware version 2130.16.0.2384 2022/06/30
- Intel INF Installation version 10.1.1.18836.8283 2022/05/16

I looked in Computer Management/Device Manager/System Devices and the only entry for Intel Management Engine was:
- Intel Management Engine Interface #1 driver version 2131.1.4.0 2021/07/21

So the version installed is newer that the one from Gigabyte even though the dates are out by a year.

Looking back in reliability history WU did a driver install of "Intel - SoftwareComponent 2130.1.15.0 on 2022/07/06

So I am somewhat confused whether I risk updating using the Gigabyte version!

What steps should I be following?

Please advise

I don't think it's the operating system causing the problem, i have an external HDD connected to Windows 11 i never have problem like yours.
