Good day all. I'm looking for facial recognition software to help me sort out decades of photos. Googling found a few suggestions but I'd welcome suggestions from users who have done what I am wanting to do - sort out thousands of photos.

I can recommend Digikam, if you have a lot of photos to deal with it is fantastic.
It is free, fast and covers almost every need.
After naming a few faces it will find matching ones.
It is a mature piece of software so give it a try.
Find it at digiKam

When I was organizing my old photos, the big chore was identifying and labeling the individual photos: who is in the picture, where was it taken, when was it taken, what was the occasion, etc. My reasoning is that, say, family members, 10 or 20 years from now will have no clue as to who, where, when. One thing I did was to cull out as many photos as possible; who needs 100 pictures of the family reunion that occurred 20 years ago....

And then there is the issue of who to send/share the pictures with and how. That photo that was important to me may have no meaning to someone else. Just a few thoughts that came to mind.

I hate deleting photos. If they are not blurred or otherwise technically useless I tend to keep them. Clicking delete and destroying something seems so final. Among my thousands of photos I also have a lot of "village past" ones - photos taken perhaps 100 years or so ago. No ideal who the person (s) is but there is interest in the way they are dressed, their activities, the area they are in, the backgrounds, and so on. But then these photos are relatively rare - a few from a few hundreds still around. Now we're talking tens of thousands! And don;t start me on "selfies"!
