File Association Issue

You can also try running the XP version of Word (winword.exe) with the /r switch. That re-registers Word; not sure if that's different from what Office setup does though.

e.g., "C:\Program Files\Imma\LittleTeapot\winword.exe" /r

As well as trying the mentioned suggestions, have you tried uninstalling both and then reinstalling?

Install the latest version first and then Office XP last.
Let Office XP replace any files if asked.
Maybe that might correct any overwritten defaults. Or have you already tried this?
I don’t really know if it would be effective.

No joy. It did pop up the configuration dialog, but didn't change the double-click open behavior.

I did do the Repair Installation operation, which I assume should do the same. I'm a little hesitant to pull both off and start fresh because it took a lot of prodding and poking to get Office XP to stop disappearing immediately after I started it. I'm a little hesitant to go back down that road as it was a rough ride and I'm not 100% sure what made it work... although I think I know.

I am not sure that it is.
However I understand you being hesitant to try the process I suggested.
