Within file explorer when files are sorted by name in ascending order, the folders appear at the top, followed by the individual files below them, each in ascending order. Is there a way to keep the same ascending sort order but have the files appear (on top) before the folders?

Thanks!

Try clicking on the "Name" column heading.
That will switch between folders at the top, and folders where ever they fall alphabetically.

Thanks for your reply! The solution you provided is not the behavior I experience; when sorted in ascending order, folders appear at the top. In descending order, the folders appear at the bottom. I need the files sorted in ascending order ...
Clicking the column name changes the sort order from ascending to descending order. Clicking a second time reverses the process.

You can right-click on the column headers and choose More, then place a checkmark in front of Attributes. Next, you should be able to click on the Name column header until it is sorted by Name ascending, and then click on the Attributes column header until it is sorted by Attributes descending. However, this only works if all the files have identical Attributes, albeit in a lot of situations the files you need to look at in alphabetical order will only have their Archive (A) attribute set. In addition to this, as an added bonus you could also decide to choose group by ➜ Attributes. If you sort by Name ascending, then the files contained within each group will still remain sorted by Name ascending after you choose to sort by Attributes descending, and, in a lot of situations, there will only be just a single group containing all the files that you need to look at. It's an old workaround for sure, but it still usually gets you where you want to be.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the approach in detail. I had spent some time looking at the different options but the idea of sorting/grouping by file attributes never occurred to me. This is what has always impressed me about windows, it's flexibility and to provide many different approaches to configure something. Of course none of this matters unless its users have the curiosity, the intelligence and the desire to take advantage of them. I was able to find a usable workaround based upon your reply. I truly appreciate your help!
