I'm trying to get the files n a folder to sort by name, not by date. I have RTFM'd search results, to no avail. I have right-clicked on a blank part of the folder, and selected SORT by NAME, but that hasn't fixed the problem.

This problem is present in a set of several days of photos with my camera. Somehow the camera's clock got reset to the factory value of 10/28/2005 midway through my photography on June 12, This date problem persisted for two additional days, which is why the last photo with the 2005 date is 10/30. I always want to sort by file name so I can break up the photos by day when i import into Adobe Lightroom Classic. But instead, Windows Explorer sorts by file date. Even copying all the files to a new folder on a different partition doesn't fix the problem. Note the display goes from _PMB5630.NEF to _PMB5070.

Those files are sorted by name. The files at the top have underscores at the beginning of the name, so they’re first.

And ChatGPT gave me the PS code to do the rename. It seemed almost instantaneous.

I gotta learn PS. Being a certified old fogy, all I know is cmd bat commands. How do you young, up to date, guys learn PS?

As a fogyette myself, I've always wondered the same thing. I have a complete mental block with it.

I took a PowerShell class in 2008, so I was in early. I think when you’re trying to learn a language, it helps to have concrete problems to solve. Books and web sites give you examples, sure, but if it’s your problem, it means more to you, and it seems to stick better. Plus if you’re victorious, you solved your own problem, which is nice.

Yep, the general purpose models do okay, but the coding-oriented ones are much better… GitHub Copilot and Claude Opus 4, for example.

For books, I’d pick up whatever Chris Dent writes.

There is also a PowerShell Discord where you can interact with… actual humans.

Thanks for this info, especially about Chris Dent. I have filed this in my 1Note folder on PowerShell.
