AI is for casual users, not for devs. It just gets in the way.

I don't know about that. I think even the best devs are able to save significant tedious work using AI. Using Visual Studio Community 2026, GitHub CoPilot can be used or not used as you please. It doesn't get in the way at all. For myself, work that used to take me a day (e.g. building an interface or figuring out a Windows API I've never used before) now takes an hour or two. I can clearly see why programming has gone from a sure thing job to "can't find a job". Fewer people are doing the same work. This is not necessarily a good thing, but it's the current reality.

A recent example, where I used AI, was to modernize a GUI written in WinForms (I wanted the program to remain compact, so no WinUI for me). I asked GitHub CoPilot in Visual Studio to create a custom checkbox (with significant details about how it should look) but the result of the first try was a complete mess (functionally and visually). So I took a different approach and asked it to find already written code for a WinForms custom checkbox and integrate that into the project. That was done in seconds. I then step by step had it modify that code to get the result I wanted. For example, I told it to make the checkbox corners rounded, set the colors to match Windows 11 controls, set it to half opacity on hover, etc. All of that took very little time (less time than I could type the code even if I knew exactly what to do) and gave me the result I was looking for. I went through a similar routine to create an on/off slider. AI gives me more time to focus on the overall logic, flow, and functionality of a program instead of being stuck for hours or days on technical details, but I admit that's less of a benefit for programmers who are much better than me.

I have down beat nystagmus --my eyes roll like a CRT losing vertical sync. Also very light sensitive.
I need large font, very clean, dark screens.
AI adds tons of clutter, and except for a few specialized uses, makes Win 11 almost unusable for daily use.

clean boot/upgrade reinstall takes me four or five days to reconfigure. Done it 7 or 8 times in the last four months.
Not a casual try this and see if it works.
Looking to buy a Windows 11 IoT Enterprise 2024 LTSC upgrade license. That would be worth reinstalling.
