I am trying to untangle a complicated Microsoft 365 / OneDrive / Windows identity situation.
The old law firm is winding down. It has been nearly five years, and the old Office / Exchange account may be expiring or already partly expired. The payment side of the old account appears to have failed or changed, but I do not yet know exactly what happened.
There are two Windows 11 PCs involved. Both are set up with local Windows accounts only, but OneDrive is still syncing files to the desktop. That means there may be old Microsoft 365 identity information still connected to OneDrive, Office, or Windows, even though the Windows sign-in itself is local.
At the same time, BitLocker or Device Encryption keeps appearing as a possible threat. It is not clear whether it is already encrypting data, preparing to encrypt data, or simply showing the option. We do not want accidental encryption or a TPM-tied recovery key problem during this transition.
The main question is: which Microsoft 365 tenant actually owns the current Office subscription, Exchange mailbox, OneDrive storage, and admin rights?
The situation is confusing because a new Microsoft 365 business account was purchased after the old Office account expired or failed. I know who is paying for the new subscription, but I do not yet know which Microsoft account, tenant, or admin identity was used to create it. Microsoft’s login pages have made this more confusing because sometimes the account appears as a personal Microsoft account, while other times it appears to have business Microsoft 365 services attached. Any Suggestions ?
