Having now got Classic Outlook to work in Office 365 and download lots of old but important emails I see an option to move to New Outlook. Is this another Microsoft horror story or is it worth doing the transition?

I understand that eventually Classic Outlook will cease to exist so should I jump now or wait for various fixes to be put in place?

Personal taste. I do not like the new outlook and will continue to use classic as long as possible.

MS will support old outlook till 2029. New outlook is not good enough, offline email can only be stored for 180 days.

That it then. I most certainly do not want another Microsoft nightmare.

New Outlook is still developing, as of now lacks the features of Classic Outlook, so I would think waiting a year or so makes sense.

I have been using it for around 10 months and has proved to be reliable, certainly not a nightmare, but I do not need fancy features.
You can get the state of developing features from MS.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to switch to the new Outlook. I'm sticking with Outlook classic for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for your reply. I reckon that that's the sensible thing to do.

Is Microsoft out of their mind? No PST files? No long-term offline email? How will that "improve" email? Or is this a plot for Outlook death by a dozen cuts?

if the new outlook is only allowing imap I would‘t switch because my online provider doesn‘t allow me to create subfolders.

It must have been the IMAP thing which allowed me to just download everything into ClassicOutlook. To be honest it was seamless.
