following a windows upate, all my previous restore points have been deleted

feel this could leave me vulnerable if i needed to do a restore, is there a way of preventing this from happening, thanks

Windows always deletes restore points it decides are no longer applicable.
- An update is often the cause of a restore point becoming inapplicable.
- There is no point in trying to find a method of hanging on to old, inapplicable restore points because they are no longer applicable i.e. no longer useful.

Your best defence is a system image made using a third-party imaging utility. Make system images even if you opt to use restore points [or their replacement point-in-time restore points].

Don't bother trying to use Windows own backup (& imaging) facility.
MS warned us not to use it 9 years ago [and recommended third-party alternatives] and it had always been unreliable anyway.

I learned a long time ago as in Win 10 days that restore points were unreliable backups if you got into serious trouble. The restore points often get purged with no warning after updates or repairs as well as often fail to complete when you try to restore one. As others have and will continue to mention the only reliable protection is using backup software to a secondary hard drive and keeping fairly recent backups.

What sort of update?

A feature update, such as updating from 23H2 to 24H2/25H2, installs a completely new new set of system files. Restore points have to be deleted as they hold old system files, and are not applicable any more.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Normally it's possible to use a restore point to revert a typicaly monthly Windows update.

A feature update (major build upgrade) is quite different. After one, inevitably all prior restore points are deleted, because what they would restore would not be appropriate to the new build and would wreck your O/S.

Once again- 3rd party disk imaging and System Restore are usefully complementary and it's essential to understand the difference and the situations in which they are most relevant, as well as their weaknesses and limitations.

Disk imaging is the foundation - e.g. letting you rescue your installation even if your system disk fails. SR most certainly and obviously cannot do that.

A Microsoft Account is not the same as being in an Insider channel.

Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program

You can become an Insider, there.
Keep in mind, that becoming an Insider is even more reason to use 3rd party backup software.

The Insider channels (there's 3-4 different kinds), install updates that MS is not sure are ready for prime time.
In other words... you'll see more bugs.

This time I was asked to turn on diagnostic data, now it's updating 'yet' again
It's now asked me to choose a channel...I chose canary and it's downloading build 26300.8553, so maybe I'll get the point in time restore option

Incidentally I do a regular laptop back with Hasleo, which I find very reliable
Used to use macrium reflect, but as I understand it, it's no longer free 😥

26300.8553 is not the 'full blown' Canary as it is on 29599.1000 for future platform.
It can be installed as an option if you want but it's a full installation so it takes a while.
29599.1000 works rather well, if you don't mind the (false) reminder to turn on the virus protection.

As far as Macrium is concerned, you can still use version 8, it still works, it just does not get updated.

Using an outdated and unsupported version is not really recommended, especially with current secure boot certificates updates.

I'm still on 8.1.8631 and my certs are updated and I have no problems.
If and when MS breaks something, I'll consider an alternative.

If Reflect X was lifetime I'd be willing to pay more for it.
