But even well rspected companies have has malware injected into their downloads or have written software with exploits. A savvy user could still get a nasty cold.

Anyone can get infected at any time, even if they dont do anything. Just landing on a bad or malicious website that has been taken over is enough.

What always sucks is when antivirus companies have their own technology used against them, like avast's driver.

I understand, but with all the false information and lies we in the US have been told in the past many years, it's forced me into being a sceptic of almost anything now days. Where does a person go to get the 100% truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Has to be some other country, because it certainly isn't here.

The company I work for (a fortune 500 company) does not have 3rd party AV. What we have in place are mandatory cybersecurity training like recognizing deepfakes, dangers of generative AI, Callback Phishing, understanding URLs, ransomware, etc. The company is investing in cybersecurity awareness. Employee awareness is the best defense. Our IT randomly sends fake emails to random employee to test everyone's cybersecurity awareness from time to time.

Excellent measures but these should be in addition tp proper endpoint protection. Does your company disable the USB ports on all computers? Employees can be really stupid. As Stalin said, 'Trust but verify'.

Yes they do. All company issued laptops have USB ports locked.

I can't believe my former employer did not do that and we had thousands of endpoints, all unrestricted. I could take my company laptop home and browse the internet without using the company VPN although it was an option.

Like already metioned, there is no problem when it comes to browsing the internet on any device. Common sense should always be enabled on top of the native AV protection.

I don't plug anything into the USB ports on my computer. I use wireless KDE Connect for my phone.

While I have Windows 11, I never really use it unless there is some software that requires it

I'm a Linux dude, but have Windows 11 boxes, for logging onto work via Citrix, for running Office 365, printing/scanning, sometimes Linux printer/scanner support sucks.

I never browse on Windows

I always trusted Kaspersky on my Windows boxes, never had issue with it, or on family member machines.
That has gone now, shortly to try out Bit Defender.

Only a small pct of PC's worldwide were effected.

I see that Bitdefender consistently outperforms MS Defender!

Personally, I use Webroot as it's so lightweight on resources and space. It installs in seconds and use heuristics not definition files.

I view them as just companies out to make a buck. Do I trust their reviews? No... I don't.

After I installed Windows 11 on my new computer, I installed McAffee AV. (Already have a VPN.) A couple of guys at work say they only use Windows Defender. Now I'm not sure what I need in terms of AV.
