This was a common workaround in UK in 1970s to get round draconian Sunday Trading Laws in UK (Scotland was much more liberal).

Typical workaround :-

Common workarounds and strategies used in the 1970s included:
  • "Free" Gift Promotions: Shops would sell a permitted item at an incredibly inflated price and "gift" the prohibited item, such as selling an orange for £100 with a free bed or lawnmower.
Prices are much lower lol.
