Regrettably I was in a local bar and an American around mid 20s in the bar had a T shirt saying "We saved Europe".
Being Brits we said nothing but I was so saddened at the disrespect.
Of course, we all know that Americans are generally very respectful of military service (indeed probably better than the UK these days regrettably).
I am from Southampton and lost two uncles in the D Day landings (I was not born for another decade so I never met them).
Fortunately we just chalked up that guy's disrespect as ignorance by a guy who thought it was funny.
Of course, the US contribution was phenomenal and UK is always grateful to the US contribution to the Allied effort.. Total Respect to the fallen heroes

This picture also shows something significant which is rarely publicised i.e. the lesser known phenomenal contribution of Canada in the D Day landings.
When I tell people in UK that Canada took one of the 5 beaches, I am saddened how few know that.
