Google expanding Results about you tool to help control your personal information online

 Google Blog:

Our Results about you tool can now help you find and request the removal of Search results containing your government-issued IDs, like a passport, driver's license or social security number.

Over 10 million people have used the ‘Results about you’ tool to control how their sensitive personal information appears online, like a phone number or home address. Today we’re expanding this tool to give you even more peace of mind. Now, you can find and request the removal of search results containing information like your driver's license, passport, or Social Security number.

Here’s how to get started.

1. Go to the Results about you hub: You can access this tool in the Google app by clicking on your Google account photo and selecting “Results about you”, or by visiting goo.gle/resultsaboutyou.

2. Add your information: If it’s your first time, click “Get started” and add the personal contact information you want to monitor. You’ll then be prompted to add your government ID numbers. If you’re already using the tool, simply click to add your ID numbers and input the ones you’d like to monitor.

To keep your sensitive information safe, “Results about you” employs Google’s rigorous security protocols and advanced encryption to prevent misuse and ensure your privacy.

3. Let us handle the monitoring: Once you’ve confirmed your details, we’ll automatically keep an eye out and notify you if we find any Search results containing that information, so you can take action.

Removing this information from Google Search doesn’t remove it from the web entirely, but this is an important step in helping you stay in control of your online presence and keep your private information private.

This new capability will be rolling out in the U.S. over the coming days, and we're working to bring it to additional regions.

Perhaps giving your sensitive personal data to Google as a search term isn't smart?
