bob = shilling (real money - not that new fangled decimal rubbish) - 12d (pence, not p (new pence) to shilling), quid = £1
20 bob to the pound.

Also - Florin = 2 shillings, Half crown = 2 shillings sixpence, guinea = 21 shillings (£1 one shilling)

I seem to remember knowing things like that when I was little.
We went to the Bahamas (Nassau) for vacation, a few times and my mother was trying to teach us Britain's monetary system. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time.

Actually, it may be odd but all our betting odds seem "odd" to other countries but betting was based on "real" money when there were 240 pence (d) to the pound. 240 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20 etc.

In general, the betting odds were designed that when bet was setting, virtually all of them paid out an exact number of pence. The settlers did not need calculators (not even invented in those days).

Of course, all computerised nowadays but part of the fun was calculating how much you would get on multiple bets.
One is actually called a yankee (six double bets, four treble bets and one four-pronged accumulator). Calculating it in "real" money was a lot easier than in decimal money.

In that new fangled decimal system, returns often would have a residual fraction of new pence.

Also, if you had 3 children and you were sharing it, each child would get 33p with 1p left over - then the arguments would start over who got the last 1p lol. In real money, each got 80d (6 shilling and 8d) - nothing left over. Of course, if 5 or 7 children, not so convenient abeit 5 works in decimal.

It was so convoluted that you couldn't leave your chair.

Better that way than how it is now - we get so many ads now (not as bad as US but getting that way), that you can watch a couple of shows at the same time, but the "b*st*rds" are now coordinating ad times on multiple channels even if different companies!

Even though BBC is getting very "woke" (annoying a lot of people), it is still much better to watch shows ad free, but cost of licence is getting too high for that priviledge.
